BWW Review: THE PIANO LESSON at Hartford StageBWW Review: THE PIANO LESSON at Hartford Stage
by Joseph Harrison - Oct 24, 2016

When is a legacy worth preserving and when is it time to move forward with life? What cost can one pay to jump-start their future? These are some of the central questions tackled in August Wilson's THE PIANO LESSON, which is now playing at Hartford Stage. One of Wilson's "Pittsburgh Cycle" plays (10 plays that shed light on African-American lives in each decade of the 20th century), THE PIANO LESSON - "a ghost story with traditional African-American songs" sits firmly in the 1930's, a time of struggle, change, and a time many African-Americans made the great migration north from the Jim Crow south, looking for a better life. BWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Magical, Mystical, Mischievous MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Is A Midwinter DelightBWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Magical, Mystical, Mischievous MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Is A Midwinter Delight
by Jill Schafer - Feb 17, 2015

Yesterday I sat on the famous thrust stage of the Guthrie Theater and watched a bunch of soldiers, lovers, and fairies dance, sing, fly, converse, love, hate, and generally cavort around in a bare circular space. Or was it all a dream? Such is the Guthrie's latest production of perhaps Shakespeare's best loved romantic comedy, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, that after three hours of spellbinding theater, you're not quite sure if what you saw just happened, or perhaps, as Puck suggests in his epilogue, it was all just a dream. Artistic Director Joe Dowling has returned to an old favorite in his final season at the Guthrie, assembling a gorgeous and talented cast of local favorites with a few national talents thrown in. It's no wonder that he returned to this show; this MIDSUMMER is a dream of a production, with plenty of spectacle in the form of dancing, flying, singing fairies, humor in the form of typical Shakesperean hijinks, and heart in this sweet romance that ends with a neat happily ever after. Everything about it is truly a delight. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Mar 13, 2014

The 52nd Street Project makes a difference in the lives of countless Hell's Kitchen (Clinton) kids by pairing them with theater professionals who mentor them through the creation of original theater. Perhaps the most poignant presentations made by The 52nd Street Project are those in its semi-annual Playmaking series, which features the Project's youngest Hell's Kitchen mentees-ten year-olds who have just begun their theatrical education-writing for accomplished professional actors and director-dramaturgs, and revealing their work to a public audience for the first time. Edie Falco and other accomplished actors, working with directors including Felix Solis and James Yaegashi, will perform in Out on a Limb: Plays that Branch Out, the Project's newest Playmaking show.
