by BWW News Desk - Jul 17, 2015

Founded by BroadwayWorld TV's own Michael Sterling (On-air Producer and Host for live entertainment news events in Los Angeles), Sterling's Upstairs first opened its doors at the renowned Vitello's Restaurant in Studio City, CA. where it single handedly brought back to Los Angeles the art of intimate upscale cabaret concerts which had all but vanished from the cultural scene in movie town, USA.  However, in due time, the venue was whole heartedly embraced by enthusiasts of LA's performing arts community and continued to thrive for 6 successful years in a former storage room that was transformed by Sterling into a true supper club environment.   (more...)

SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10+ Most Important Gay Musicals, Part 2SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10+ Most Important Gay Musicals, Part 2
by Pat Cerasaro - Jul 2, 2015

The BroadwayWorld community is nothing if not vocal and yesterday's critical column revealing my top picks for the most important gay musicals of all time inspired many reactions in the feedback, on Facebook and on social media, ranging from 'I LOVE LOVE LOVE COCO' to 'No FUN HOME?' to 'Where's THE FAGGOT?' and far beyond. As with any list such as this, historical perspective is an essential element and a musical such as FUN HOME that has only been on Broadway mere months is obviously too new to truly assess insofar as its historical influence and impact on the overall legacy of gay musicals on Broadway in toto - going as far back as 1969's COCO and covering all the way up to 2013's KINKY BOOTS, as yesterday's list did. So, as a result, we are giving you more of what you asked for and sharing 10 more musicals that have been important to the gay movement, all of which cited in yesterday's column but not included on the actual top ten. What follows are my personal choices, so what are yours? Let us know and perhaps we will even need to do another list to shine a light on even more LGBT touchstones. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Hal Prince's Broadway: An Evening In Word and SongBWW Reviews: Hal Prince's Broadway: An Evening In Word and Song
by Ellen Sterling - May 28, 2015

First, a reviewer's confession: Hal Prince is one of my heroes. With him - through his shows - I've been able to travel the world and travel through history. There was ancient Rome (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum), 1930's Germany (Cabaret) mid-20th century Argentina (Evita), the American South in early 20th-century (Parade, probably my favorite show), New York City during the 1950s (West Side Story), early 20th century Sweden A Little Night Music), and lots more times and places in lots more shows - among them (Follies, Company, Pacific Overtures, She Loves Me, Sweeney Todd. by Alix Cohen - May 26, 2015

On Sunday evening, 54 Below celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the musical Grand Hotel on Broadway in high style with two performances crackling with energy and featuring a talented roster of performers including 13 from the original cast. Splendidly Directed (and Written) by Walter Willison, with Musical Direction by Alex Rybeck, Bass Accompaniment from Ray Kiddain, and Dance Supervision by Yvonne Marceau, the delicious production (one really can't call it a concert despite lack of dialogue) was fluid, polished, and imaginative in its use of the room. From leads to the chorus, voices were strong, commitment thorough. In the audience, Tommy Tune must've had a helluva time. We did. (more...)
