Sarasota Jewish Theatre Announces 2022-23 Season

Sarasota Jewish Theatre has announced its 2022-23 season lineup. Local Sarasota favorite actors and directors will be joined by national actors to present these plays reflecting Jewish heritage and culture. The plays are:
Theatre Odyssey Awards First VERNA SAFRAN PRIVE to Jake Pettingell

The first Verna Safran Prize ($1,000) has been awarded to Jake Pettingell, a Sarasotan who attends Saint Stephen's Episcopal School, for his play THE REAL WORLD, set in a post-nuclear war era about a family of four living together in a military bunker. Directed by Blake Walton, the play was performed at the festival by actors Owen DeMaio, Jude DeMaio, Ann Morrison (who, with a day's notice, replaced an actor who became ill), and Tony Boothby.

Now in its 6th Season, SaraSolo has evolved and will take place as 3 festivals this year all focusing on the power of the solo performance. HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr explores the life, inventions and person of Hedy Lamarr, Viennese-born Hollywood film star of the 1930s-1950s. Known as The Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Hedy Lamarr stored away knowledge of munitions while married to Austrian arms dealer, Fritz Mandl. She employed this knowledge to support the US Navy's war effort during WWII by inventing The Secret Communication System with composer George Antheil, to make torpedoes more accurate. Also referred to as Frequency Hopping or Spread Spectrum Technology, her invention is used today in cell phones, WiFi, CDMA, GPS, Bluetooth and a myriad of other wireless systems.

This annual theater festival features an eclectic mix of 45-90-minute solo performances by national and international artists - featuring music, dance, cabaret, comedy, magic, poetry, performance art, stand-up, storytelling and visual art creation as well as biographical, autobiographical and poetic plays.

The performances , spread over two weekends , January 27 & 28 and February 3 & 4 , at Sarasota's Pioneer Park historic site venue , Crocker Memorial Church , 1260 12th Street.

FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, presents Ann Morrison (Merrily We Roll Along, Lovemusik, Goblin Market) in My Furniture Set on January 3rd, 7pm. 'My Furniture Set' with John Shirley at the piano, was inspired by the exquisite furniture at the Home Resource Contemporary Furnishings in Annie's home town Sarasota, Florida.
