The Arden Theatre Company is preparing for the regional premiere of Jocelyn Bioh's School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, a buoyant and biting comedy that explores the universal similarities (and glaring differences) facing teenage girls across the globe. Directed by Amina Robinson (the Arden's 74 Seconds...To Judgment.), the play will run at the Arden's Arcadia Stage now through June 5, 2022.

Lantern Theater Company has announced its upcoming 2021/22 season, a return to live performance that will include an ambitious and eclectic mix of classic and contemporary work for the stage.

The Outrageous Sophie Tucker is the story of a turn of the 20th century immigrant girl and how she became the Last of The Red Hot Mamas. The show chronicles her early years as a singing waitress at her family's restaurant in Hartford, and spotlights how a first-generation full-figured Jewish girl partnered with Black performers Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Molly Elkins to revolutionize American entertainment, onstage and off.

Queens Theatre will present the third installment of the Fly On The Wall Series on Saturday, May 29 at 8:00 PM (ET). Theatre Horizon, a professional theatre company in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, is gearing up to welcome a R&B singing carnivorous plant to Norristown. The company will present LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS: IN CONCERT, a highly anticipated show with the award-winning team behind the theatre's 2018 production of THE COLOR PURPLE. The musical's cast, comprised entirely of people of color, will lift their voices to the rafters in this rock musical comedy for a limited engagement of January 24-26, 2020. As I walked in to recent Barrymore-winning Director Amina Robinson's newest project, I was excited to see what she would do next. But, Azuka Theatre's Sunset Baby was something Robinson and her projects are usually not: unremarkable. 

Azuka Theatre kicks off their 2019-2020 season with Sunset Baby, by nationally acclaimed playwright Dominique Morriseau. In Sunset Baby, a mother's bequest of love letters written to her infamous husband create a foundation for a fraught father-daughter relationship. What is worth holding onto, and why? The script is an energized, vibrant, and witty look at the point where the personal and political collide. The production is directed by Amina Robinson and stars Victoria Aaliyah Goins (Nina), Steven Wright (Kenyatta) and Eric Carter (Damon). Sunset Baby runs from November 6 to November 24, 2019, with opening night set for Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 7:00pm, at Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake (302 S. Hicks Street). Azuka continues its pay-what-you-decide model for this show where audiences are invited to experience the art on stage and pay based on the value of their experience after. The 25th Annual Barrymore Awards were held in South Philly and awarded $92,000 in grants to artists and organizations.
