For Ryan

Parker native and CSU graduate, Ben Hilzer will play Action in the upcoming Parker Arts and Inspire Creative production of West Side Story at the PACE Center. In his recent acting career Hilzer has performed as Davey in Jerusalem (Edge Theater), Moritz in Spring Awakening (OpenStage), and Fred in A Christmas Carol (PACE Center). This isn't just another role for Hilzer though, in a previous production of West Side Story, Hilzer's friend Ryan played the role of Action as well. Sadly, Ryan has since passed away. For Hilzer, his performance will be his way of honoring Ryan and his memory. "You originated this role for me, Ryan." Hilzer says, "Your impact on the world (on and off the stage) will always be remembered and cherished. I can't thank you enough for everything you've done. This is for you, pal."

Small Details Show A Bigger Picture

In this gritty, yet nostalgic production of West Side Story, Inspire Creative and Parker Arts transport the audience to a turf war in New York between the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. For Founder and President of Inspire Creative, Ralph Neumann, as well as Founder and Artistic Director, Gary Lewis, it is important that this production stay true to the original script. Although some of the language in the show is admittedly dated, they feel strongly that its overarching storyline is still extremely relevant today in regards to racial tension in society. Neumann laments, "With recent events occurring in the U.S. like the turmoil in Ferguson, Missouri and the shooting in South Carolina, unfortunately racial discrimination and prejudice for various groups and individuals continues to be a major issue. West Side Story places a magnifying glass on that issue and speaks to the tragedy and consequences that result when people divide themselves."

This production of West Side Story captures this difficult adult content with an all-adult cast. Made up of some of Colorado's finest local talent, performers hail from various backgrounds including students attending DU, instructors and teachers from various organizations, seasoned actors, and professional dancers. The set is that of a New York rooftop with the lighting and staging assisting in creating the drama. The show is very physical in nature and as a result Inspire Creative has enlisted the help of a fight coordinator to provide the most realistic performance possible while still maintaining safety for the performers. It all comes together with a live sixteen piece orchestra performing Bernstein's classic score. Tickets are on sale now for this timeless musical, go online at www.ParkerArts.org or call the Box Office at 303.805.6800.
