Social media posts are reporting of the death of beloved and admired Broadway character actor Edmund Lyndeck, at age 90.

Having made his Broadway debut in THE ZIEGFELD FOLLIES OF 1943, Lyndeck created the roles of Rev. John Witherspoon in 1776 and Cinderella's Father in INTO THE WOODS, but was best known as the original Judge Turpin in Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's SWEENEY TODD.

Below is a clip of Lyndeck and George Hearn performing "Pretty Women" from that production.

Lyndeck played the older version of Doug Henning's title character in the musical MERLIN, and opened the show's featured segment at the 1983 Tony Awards.

On film, Lyndcck is best remember as the racially Mr. Herlihy in Adam Sandler's BIG DADDY.
