Welcome to BroadwayWorld's Tony Award Countdown: 30 Years In 30 Days, a look at some of the Tony Awards' most memorable moments from the past three decades.

Today we go back to 1986, when Bernadette Peters won her first Best Actress In A Musical prize for her breathtaking performance in SONG AND DANCE, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black's unusual musical that told the story of a fractured romance with a song cycle first act and a full-length ballet second act.

Peters played a young English woman finding love and adventure in New York and Hollywood, having the stage all to herself for the musical's first half singing a total of twenty songs and reprises.

The score included the heart-breaking ballad, "Tell Me On A Sunday," but for the Tony broadcast Peters sang the beautiful anthem of the surprise of falling in love, "Unexpected Song."

The American Theatre Wing's 70th Annual Tony Awards, hosted by Tony Award winner James Corden, will air on the CBS Television Network on Sunday, June 12, 2016 (8:00-11:00 PM, ET/delayed PT) live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
