RAISIN, adapted from Lorraine Hansberry's groundbreaking drama A RAISIN IN THE SUN, has not been frequently produced since winning the 1974 Tony Award for Best Musical.

So the upcoming Astoria Performing Arts Center production of the musical with a book by Robert Nemiroff (Hansberry's widower) and Charlotte Zaltzberg, music by Judd Woldin and lyrics by Robert Brittan offers a rare opportunity.

Directed by artistic director Dev Bondarin, RAISIN will run from May 4th through the 27th, 2017, at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 30-44 Crescent St, Astoria, New York. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for students/seniors.

As with Hansberry's classic, RAISIN takes place in segregated 1950s Chicago, where Walter Lee Younger and his mother Lena fight over the spending of insurance money. He wants to start a business with friends, while she is eager to move the family out of the south side and into Clybourne Park.

Seen in the video, two songs from RAISIN were presented on the 1974 Tony Award telecast. Ralph Carter, nominated as Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, sings "Sidewalk Tree," followed by Virginia Capers, who would win the award for Best Actress in a Musical, performing "A Whole Lotta Sunlight."
