Although Stone procured the rights for the story, along with producing partner Moritz Borman from Guardian journalist Luke Harding, THE SNOWDEN FILES is actually based on the novel, Time of the Octopus. The book, by Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden's Russian lawyer, mostly chronicles Snowden's stint seeking asylum from the United States in Russia.

Also in the cast are Shailene Woodley (as Snowden's girlfriend), Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Scott Eastwood (as an NSA agent) and Ben Schnetzer.
