Claudio Monteverdi's Vespers for the Blessed Virgin, written in 1610, are a hauntingly beautiful, mesmerizing, masterpiece of baroque sacred music. The text is dedicated to St. Mary, but includes verses from the Song of Songs, the love poems of King Solomon. The music was a real innovation at the time, surrounding cantus firmus plainsong by glorious counterpoint. It is a moving work of unforgettable grandeur and at the same time intimacy, not often heard live with period instruments for which it was written. This is a real opportunity to hear them performed, by the excellent professional choir of St. John-at-Hampstead, and with period instruments, directed by Geoffrey Webber. The event is to celebrate the 50 years of the Hampstead Church Music Trust, which supports the performance of sacred music (and other classical music suitable for performance in a church) in Hampstead Booking: https://go.evvnt.com/3370482-2?pid=11710 Time: 19:00 - 21:00
