A mother mourns. A guard struggles. A troubled young woman is alone with her thoughts. Three women, inextricably tied to one another, wrestle with the slow and undeniable realization that despite their effords, they cannot escape the system which has brought them to this brink, and wont release them. Watching Glory Die depicts the final days of a young woman experiencing mental illness while incarcerated. Inspired by a true story, this play delves into her experience, and the experiences of those around her specifically her mother, who mourns her daughter even before she has died, and a prison guard she connects with, and who is implicated in her death. Touching on themes of isolation and interrogating how those with mental illness are treated by our society, and within the prison system, the play challenges audiences to examine their own perceptions and sensitivities including whether they could have acted differently if confronted by a similar situation, and recognition of our own complicity as a society in these events which may feel far away from our own daily lives. Watching Glory Die is a meditation on isolation, loss, and our need for connection.
