The Royal Conservatory of Music has announced that there have been some updates to the line-up of the musicians slated to perform in the upcoming Miles Electric Band concert on October 14.

The principal band members now include two-time Grammy nominee Robert Irving on piano, guitarist David Gilmore (M-Base, Wayne Shorter), acclaimed percussionist Munyungo Jackson, saxophonist Antoine Roney (Lenny Kravitz, Elvin Jones), bassist Dywane "MonoNeon" Thomas, Jr. (Prince), programmer/re-mixer DJ Logic, Toronto tabla master Ravi Naimpally, and, sitting in for Miles on trumpet, is Trinidadian master and Koerner Hall favourite Etienne Charles. The band will be led by Grammy Award-winning drummer, former bandmate, and nephew of MiLes Davis, Vincent Wilburn, Jr.

This concert kicks off the TD Jazz: The Roots of Jazz Series, which features a six concert gumbo of some of the 'ingredients' that make up jazz.

The New Canadian Global Music Orchestra, a major initiative by The Royal Conservatory of Music established a year ago to celebrate the cultural diversity and pluralism of our great country as it turns 150, has already enjoyed great success. The 12 members of the orchestra performed their inaugural concert in Koerner Hall on June 2 (which was later broadcast on CBC Radio), opened of City of Toronto Canada 150 Celebration at Nathan Philips Square in Toronto, and appeared at various summer festivals, such as Ottawa Chamberfest at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. They are travelling next to the National Music Centre in Calgary, where they will perform on September 30, followed by the ensemble's first recording at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in early October. Further performances include Lula Lounge in Toronto on November 7, presented by the City of Toronto as part of MomenTO, Sounds Like Toronto concert series, an appearance at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts in Kingston, ON, on February 24, 2018 and finally a return to Koerner Hall on April 7, 2018.

In additional news, classical music superstar, violinist Joshua Bell will play Edvard Grieg's Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Minor, op. 45 instead of the composer's Violin Sonata No. 2 in G Major, op. 13. The rest of the program remains unchanged with Mendelssohn's Violin Sonata in F Major (1838), Brahms's Violin Sonata No. 1 in G Major, op. 78, and additional surprises to be announced from the stage. His sold-out recital with pianist Alessio Bax takes place on November 4.
