Review: FIREBIRD, Southwark Playhouse
by Clementine Scott - Jul 16, 2026

The culture wars surrounding grooming gangs have never felt more poisonous. With the right-wing press champing at the bit to use organised child abuse as fodder for anti-immigrant narratives, and the details of how such abuse actually occurs hidden in the weeds of abandoned inquiries, there is something to be said for taking a step back and returning our focus to the lives of the young victims.
Guest Post: Director Marlie Haco On Gendered Violence, Exploitation, And Reviving FIREBIRD At Southwark Playhouse
by Guest Author - Jul 14, 2026

Since the 2010s, grooming gangs have remained a recurring feature of the British news cycle. Yet despite investigations, inquiries and prosecutions, the issue remains unresolved. There often seems to be a collective reluctance to engage with the reality of what these experiences mean for the survivors who live through them.

Review: SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE, Southwark Playhouse
by Cindy Marcolina - Jun 6, 2026

Kurt Vonnegut’s anti-war sci-fi is probably one of the most censored novels of the 20th century. Published in 1969, it’s a methodical indictment of war and a sharp critique of traditional American values. The book has been reproached for its obscene and graphic writing, the exact same reasons why it remains such a relevant and uncompromising piece of literature. Eric Simonson’s acclaimed adaptation barges into Southwark Playhouse with its unyielding message. Director Douglas Baker reinforces the story’s nature as a parable of resistance and a cautionary tale against the dehumanising practices of warfare.

Review: REDCLIFFE, Southwark Playhouse
by Clementine Scott - May 29, 2026

In early 1753, two men – a footman named William Critchard and a sailor named Richard Arnold – were arrested and executed for ‘buggery’ in the Bristol suburb of Redcliffe. The story, recently uncovered through court documents in local archives, is an unusually detailed account of the prosecution of homosexuality in Britain, and forms the basis of a new musical fable.
