BWW Review: NYNE'S CABARET A DAZZLING, CAUTIONARY TALE at Portico
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - June 16, 2019
I was a blank page and opening night, the NYNE cast of Cabaret left permanent marks all over me. A latecomer to the live theatre world, I knew a movie and musical existed, and it is important to me to cross this classic musical off my list of must-sees. I'd heard some of the songs because they occasionally popped up in musicals playlist on Spotify, but had no idea what the show is about. I try not to research before going to a performance because I want to see if the cast can tell me the story. The uneasy juxtaposition of a seedy cabaret of sexy guys and girls in lingerie where anything could happen, showcased in a church community center only added to this stunning, provocative production. The show would have lost its impact without the choice of live music, under the masterful direction of Joseph Scarbrough. I had no idea the audience would be entertained by a titillating cabaret while the world is falling apart. I didn't realize a musical written in 1966, revised in 1998, would sadly be art imitating life.

Yes, it features perhaps the greatest song in musical theatre history, but does Don Quixote's quest here lack zest?

BWW Review: ROCK OF AGES 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR TOTALLY ROCKS at Straz Center For The Performing Arts
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - June 13, 2019
In 1987, the sleazy Sunset Strip is hopping and Dupree's Bourbon Room, a hair band bar owned by Dennis (Ryan M. Hunt) is the place to be for Sherrie (Katie LaMark) a Midwestern, hopeful actress who just came to town to find a job and love in a Rockstar-wannabe named Drew (Anthony Nuccio). In Rock of Ages at the Straz Center through June 15, true love is a not a straight and narrow trail. In fact, it veers so much you often wonder how destiny will bring them back together.

BWW Review: THE JUNGLE BOOK, A MUSICAL IS ENTERTAINING, IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE at Carrollwood Players Theatre
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - June 09, 2019
Seldom does a reviewer get to see 'behind the curtain,' the director's enthusiastic vision of the set carefully sketched in a notepad long before it becomes an actual intricate tiered wooden platform or the director painstakingly folding pieces of paper together that would eventually be black lit painted, lighted and turned into the faces of the animals that would be called the jungle home. On Friday, the painted paper puppets that I saw months ago from director Drew Eberhard came to reality on top of the heads of the actors. Besides Jekyll and Hyde, the set of The Jungle Book Musical at Carrollwood Player is one of my favorites to date.

Unless you were a very young child protected from the brutal images on the TV screen, most can remember where they were on September 11, 2001 when our country became acutely aware of how airplanes under terrorist control were leveraged as deadly history-creating bombs. Now imagine if you were a passenger on an airplane flying to America and finding yourself diverted to a small town in Newfoundland with no knowledge of why.
