In the house of Parisian high-end lady of pleasure Violetta Valéry there is dancing, feasting, and lovemaking. Among her admirers is Alfredo Germont, a young man of respectable family who, unlike his hedonistic companions, loves her with a passion he has never felt before. She indulges in a daydream where she might share that love, but banishes it with the reflection that the only life for her is the pleasures of the moment and the mad revels rounding out each day. But Alfredo’s voice still echoes in her heart and, finally overwhelmed by this new emotion, she abandons her dissolute life to live with him alone in a country villa not far from Paris. Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont visits Violetta, and persuades her to give up their scandalous relationship. She returns to her old life in town, becoming the favourite courtesan of Baron Duphol, but her life of pleasure has taken its toll. As she wastes away from tuberculosis and Alfredo, unaware of the sacrifice she has made for him, rejects her publicly, the only hope for a ray of light on Violetta’s lonely agony lies in the hands of Giorgio Germont…
