ROMEO UND JULIA is Now Playing at The Opernhaus Zürich
Performances will run through June 26, 2026.
The Opernhaus Zürich is presenting a new production of Romeo und Julia, choreographed and directed by Cathy Marston, through June 26, 2026. Based on William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy and set to Sergei Prokofiev’s celebrated score, the ballet marks the first collaboration between Marston, Director of Ballett Zürich, and General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda.
Running approximately two hours and 30 minutes, including an intermission after the first act, the production reimagines one of literature’s most enduring love stories through Marston’s distinctive choreographic voice. The creative team includes scenario by Cathy Marston and Edward Kemp, sets and costumes by David Fleischer, lighting design by Martin Gebhardt, and dramaturgy by Edward Kemp and Michael Küster.
Set in Verona, Romeo und Julia explores the transformative power of love amid a world torn apart by conflict and division. Prokofiev’s richly textured score underscores the emotional intensity of Shakespeare’s tale, capturing both the tenderness of young love and the violence that ultimately destroys it.
The cast features Lucas van Rensburg as Romeo, Max Richter as Julia, Erik Kim as Mercutio, Breanna Foad as Benvolia, Caroline Perry as Angelica, Dustin True as Tybalt, Brandon Lawrence as Lorenzo, and Wei Chen as Paris. The production also features Ballett Zürich, Junior Ballett, students from the Tanz Akademie Zürich, and the Orchestra of Oper Zürich.
Audience members can attend a pre-performance introduction 45 minutes before each performance. The final performance on June 26 will be broadcast live on Sechseläutenplatz as part of the Opernhaus für alle initiative.
