Don Pedro Calderón de la Barca wrote this work as a sacramental which was represented for the first time in the Festival of Corpus Christi in Valencia, in 1641, although it is believed that it was written a decade before. The great theatre of the world describes life as a staging, imagines the world as if it were a large theater and conveys the idea that only through death becomes real life. Each character of this great comedy staged its role, and when you finish the work will receive a reward or a punishment, as it has done right or wrong.
Carlos Saura, known worldwide for his activity as film director and photographer, makes his first foray into the world of the dramatic theatre. And it does so with an essay where he presents own Calderon managing his work, supported by a troupe of actors who must strive in clarify complexity representing an Auto Sacramental of the 17TH century for the viewer of today. Taking advantage of the glossy structure of the piece Calderoniana, Saura created an enjoyable spectacle of theatre within the theatre itself, playing with the past and the present, and highlighting the beauty of the text. And for this purpose relies on a cast of leading figures in the theatrical scene and great popularity such as Antonio Gil, Eulalia Ramón José Luis García Pérez, Fele Martínez, Ruth Gabriel, Adriana Ugarte and Emilio Buale, Manuel Morón and thus up to eleven actors performing a tremendously choral work.
