April 1994. The ‘Rainbow Nation’ is born. The presidency of Nelson Mandela heralds a period of inter-racial healing and a national spirit of reconciliation. Angela Cameron, a suburban mom, adopts Lindiwe Mlandu, a born-free orphan who loses her parents in the ‘New South Africa’.
Fast forward to 2012, the year of the liberation-movement-now-ruling-party’s centenary. It is Lindiwe’s matric year. Something happens that not only challenges the mother-daughter relationship, but brings to the surface the wounds, the boils, the scars of a country still struggling to heal itself of its divided past.
Rainbow Scars is a powerful exploration of some of the complexities of contemporary South African relationships, layered with dollops of humour.
