BWW Review: Joyce DiDonato and Harry Bicket's English Concert Handle Handel's ARIODANTE Quite Nicely at Carnegie Hall
by Richard Sasanow - May 5, 2017

Harry Bicket and the English Concert returned for its just-about-annual Handel-fest at Carnegie Hall with a concert performance of the well-loved ARIODANTE by Handel, starring the even better-loved mezzo Joyce DiDonato. The result was some awfully fine singing--particularly from DiDonato in fine dramatic form--although the pretty disastrous casting of one of the principals (at least from my point of view) brought the production down from the lofty heights it could have attained. BWW Blog: Erin Kong - The Chance of a Lifetime: Singing with Kristin Chenoweth
by Guest Blogger: Erin Kong - May 27, 2016

Imagine: your childhood hero, the woman who coined one of your 8-year-old self's favorite songs, holding your hand in front of hundreds of people, the renowned Phoenix Symphony gushing in gorgeous melodies behind you. You are surrounded by your friends and classmates, and bowing in front of an ocean of applauding strangers. No, this is not a dream. This was very much reality. Last weekend I had the opportunity of performing backup vocals with fifteen of my classmates at Arizona State University, for Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth.  (more...)

GOOD MORNING, THEATERATI for June 6, 2017
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 6, 2017

GOOD MORNING, THEATERATI! It's Tuesday, June 6, 2017 - and we know what you're thinking: Where the hell was my favorite early morning theater news and gossip yesterday? Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to raise ourselves up from the bed and make our way to our desk in order to start writing. After a particularly challenging weekend, we were a bit Under the Weather and, truth be told, exhausted. We offer our abject apologies and request your indulgences, although we were just as disappointed as we hope you were because we were unable to live life dramatically with any sense of style on Monday. BWW Reviews: Soprano Mariella Devia is 'Queen for a Day' at Opera Orchestra's ROBERTO DEVEREUX
by Richard Sasanow - Jun 11, 2014

In New York, Donizetti's ROBERTO DEVEREUX will forever be associated with Beverly Sills' powerful portrayal of Elizabeth I, and her stern photo glaring out from the cover of Time Magazine. However, Italian soprano Mariella Devia, a vocal miracle at 66, nearly caused a riot in the role at Carnegie Hall on June 5, performing with the Opera Orchestra of New York under the baton of its founder, Eve Queler. BWW Review: A Thrilling Ride On A Well-Mounted RHINOCEROS
by Gil Kaan - Jul 21, 2017

Director Guillermo Cienfuegos expertly guides his talented RHINOCEROS cast with tight, sturdy reins in a truly full-length play (three acts, spanning close to three hours) now at the Pacific Resident Theatre. Eugene Ionesco originally wrote RHINOCEROS in 1959 as his commentary on the state of the political atmosphere then. So, ironically funny (and sad) that various lines of dialogue throughout Ionesco's comedy resonate in its timely relevance today. (more...)

BWW Review: Radvanovsky Tears Up the Stage in MARIA STUARDA at the Met
by Richard Sasanow - Feb 9, 2016

With MARIA STUARDA at the Met, we're back for the second installment of Donizetti's so-called Tudor Trilogy, with ANNA BOLENA (Anne Boleyn) already off to the gallows and ROBERTO DEVEREUX (with Bette Davis and Errol Flynn, it was “Elizabeth and Essex”) still to come. It's the first time the Met is doing all three operas, with the singular soprano Sondra Radvanovsky as Anna, Maria and Elisabetta (in DEVEREUX, next month). Her Anna was grand, but her Maria was even better. (more...)

BWW Interview: Catching up with Kristen Beth Williams
by Caroline Sposto - Feb 11, 2016

The wildly popular musical, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder will be at The Memphis Orpheum February 9 - 14th. This daring, dark comedy hails from Roy Horniman's 1907 novel, Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal, told through the eyes of a man who bumps off the aristocrats standing in the way of his title. In 1949, the book was loosely adapted into the movie, 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' which starred Dennis Price, Joan Greenwood, Valerie Hobson, and Alec Guinness. In 2014, Robert Freedman and Steven Lutvak set the story to music. It has been nabbing awards and slaying audiences ever since. (more...)

BWW Review: A CINDERELLA CHRISTMAS Lythgoe Family Panto Scores Big
by Don Grigware - Dec 12, 2016

For the last few years the uber talented Lythgoe family have been entertaining us at Christmastime, at the Pasadena Playhouse with a British style panto. A panto is an interactive entertainment that starts with a very contemporary retelling of a fairy tale such as Snow White, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, or in this case Cinderella  and turns it into a fun imaginative show with music that will appeal to both children and their parents. There's usually an actor or two in drag, and a villain ... and audience are encouraged to root for the heroes and HISS loudly at the villains. It's all in amusement, of course, and this year's A Cinderella Christmas is all good fun with a superb cast, some fine pop singing and fast-paced dancing... and, first and foremost, a funfilled script by Kris Lythgoe. To pull the younger audience into the proceedings, crowns and magic wands are on sale. The kids wave their wands on high to encourage the union of Prince Charming (Kenton Duty) and Cinders, short for Cinderella (Lauren Taylor). The delightful family show plays at the Pasadena Playhouse throughout the holiday season until January 8. (more...)
