On Friday, October 19, 2018 at 8:00pm, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) presents a performance by Jace Clayton aka DJ /rupture in conjunction with the African Americans in WNC & Southern Appalachia Conference. The event features Clayton's latest video The Jacob Lawrence of Jacob Lawrence, a hand-drawn animation with texts that form part of the script for the live performance, inspired by BMCM+AC's landmark exhibition Between Form and Content: Perspectives on Jacob Lawrence.

The performance celebrates the 80thAnniversary of the Kindertransport and a portion of proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust.

Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, a dynamic hub for the lively arts and vital community resource, presents the Los Angeles Master Chorale in two performances of Orlando di Lasso's dramatic a cappella masterpiece Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of St. Peter) directed by Peter Sellars on Saturday, October 20, and Sunday, October 21, 2018, at 7:30 pm, in the Bram Goldsmith Theater at The Wallis. Conducted by the Master Chorale's Associate Conductor Jenny Wong and featuring 21 singers, the production is the first a cappella staging and most personal and emotionally-charged work to date from the acclaimed director's creative mind. Twenty-one singers transform the 75-minute Renaissance masterpiece - committed to memory and dramatically staged - into both a biblical parable of St. Peter's disavowal of Jesus Christ and a contemporary allegory for our fractious times. This marks The Wallis debut of the Master Chorale, whose appearance is part of a 13-city international tour that also includes performances at the Ravinia Festival in Illinois, the Melbourne International Arts Festival in Australia, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, The Barbican Centre in London and the Cite de la Musique in Paris.

Theater and film meet when the LGBT dystopian tale 'Hiding in Daylight' starts filming in September in New York State. Playwright Gregory G. Allen wrote the story as both a one act play and a screenplay. After filmmaker Cheryl Allison read the script, she knew she wanted to make the film. Casting has been announced with Gerald McCullouch, Judy McLane, Julee Cerda, and Gary Hilborn starring in the ensemble piece. Allison's film company WOW Films and Allen's company ASD Media & Entertainment have co-produced the upcoming short with producer Carina Rush and Allison will direct. It will hit the festival circuit in 2019.

After opening its first permanent home in November 2017 and presenting an inaugural season that included a "tantalizing production" of Pay No Attention to the Girl, a New York Times critic's pick, Target Margin Theater (Founding Artistic Director David Herskovits, Associate Artistic Director Moe Yousuf) is pleased to announce its second season at The Doxsee. In 1962 West Side Story won 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Musical. Is it still worth seeing more than half a century later? Sure is! Jerome Robbins' energetic choreography remains riveting, and Leonard Bernstein's marvelous score is a perfect frame for Sondheim's affecting lyrics. A live performance of its musical soundtrack by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra gave the film an even greater impact. The dances seemed that much more energetic and exciting, and the closing Romeo and Juliet-like death scene more wrenchingly emotional. I don't think I've ever before heard more audible signs of a movie audience trying to repress tears.

The Actors Fund announced today that tickets are now on sale for a special screening of the original 1933 film King Kong, in partnership with the Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) as part of their ongoing film series, 'Life on the Stage: Conversation and Film.' For the past several summers, I have attended the Festival of Arts and The Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. But this year, I also decided to also visit two other art festivals along Laguna Canyon Road rather than spend any time cruising the town as I had done before. The full-day of exploring all the artistic delights on display this year at all three locations left me dazzled by all the talent on display, while wishing I had lot of extra income to purchase and bring home many of the awe-inspiring items that caught my fancy. But the real highlight of the day was viewing the abundance of 'local color' on display in this summer's 'Under the Sun' themed Pageant of the Masters.

Quite possibly the most popular family-friendly stage musical of all time, ANNIE---the classic 1977 Tony Award winner for Best Musical based on Harold Gray's 'Little Orphan Annie' comic strip---seems like a no-brainer choice to appear as the annual all-star summer musical at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl. So it's actually not a surprise that this plucky, unabashedly charming production---now causing giddy bursts of laughter and collective choruses of 'awwww's' at Hollywood's iconic 18,000-seat outdoor arena for two more performances this weekend---is such a perfect fit. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced the selection of four Honorees who will receive the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements, and a special Honors distinction for a work of art and its co-creators. Recipients to be honored at the 41st annual national celebration of the arts are: singer and actress Cher, composer and pianist Philip Glass, Country music entertainer Reba McEntire, and jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter. This year, the co-creators of Hamilton-writer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, and music director Alex Lacamoire-will receive a unique Kennedy Center Honors as trailblazing creators of a transformative work that defies category.
