Greg Hildebrandt Reveals Painting Of Kong: The 8th Wonder Of The World At New York Comic Con

Unbeknownst to the artist when he started the painting 2 months ago, King Kong is making his grand entrance on Broadway the same weekend Greg Hildebrandt reveals an 86-inch tall 3 Sheet style painting of his vision for the original movie poster. The painting will be on display at his gallery's booth at New York Comic Con all four days of the show where Hildebrandt is offering photo opportunities for fans to stand with him next to the monstrous painting. The best part? He plans to see the show the next weekend.

At 79 years old, Greg Hildebrandt has decided to create his take on movie posters from the 30's, 40's and 50's-and they are larger than life! Back in April, Greg began his newest artistic journey, titled, "What If?". The idea behind this series is for Greg to create today what he would have done if he was hired to do the original movie poster for some of his favorite movies from his childhood and youth. The first in the series was previously announced back in April. This Piece is a movie poster based on the original Creature From the Black Lagoon, which was first released in 1954. Greg and his brother Tim first saw this film when they were 15 years old, and it would forever be a film that remains in his heart.

As an artist and a twin, Greg often felt like an outsider, much like the monsters in the movies he adored. Greg created a list of his top 50 movies from his childhood. The second piece Greg wanted to do was the 8th wonder of the world, the 1933 classic film King Kong! After seeing the film in a local theatre in Detroit, Greg became so obsessed with this film that he has watched it every year since as a Thanksgiving tradition! Greg decided to do this painting in a larger than life fashion so he designed it as a three sheet. A three sheet is a common term for a movie poster that is normally approximately 3 times the size of the most common used poster, called a one sheet. At 86" tall, the painting truly is a wonder!

After six weeks of painting, Greg was surprised to learn that King Kong, the musical, will be making its grand debut as a Broadway production opening weekend of New York Comic Con this October. Greg's Kong painting will be making its debut at New York Comic Con at his Spiderweb Art Gallery Booth #1764 the very same weekend. Greg refers to the synchronicity of these events with reverence. For him, it is an amazing occurrence that reassures him that he is on the right track, and further inspires him to continue this series. His excitement is such that he even bought tickets for his family and friends to see the Broadway show the following weekend, stating, "This production is an incredible theatrical and technological achievement. I never thought in my lifetime I'd see anything like it!"

With other favorites such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Metropolis, War of the Worlds and Nightmare Alley on Greg's list of titles he wants to paint, we can only wonder what will come next!
