Nicole Parker stars opposite Justin Kirk in the west coast premiere of THESE PAPER BULLETS! A Modish Ripoff of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at Geffen Playhouse this month. Written by Rolin Jones (Weeds, Friday Night Lights, Boardwalk Empire) with songs by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and directed by Jackson Gay, the show opened to great reviews at Yale Repertory Theatre where it premiered in 2014. Now the Geffen begins its 20th anniversary season with what promises to be a British invasion on stage not seen since the Beatles. Still high on the adrenaline of a full day of rehearsal, an energetic Parker spoke to me about her experience working on the new production. I think you'll see why the former star of Wicked and MADtv landed the role. This is one all-around great gal

In a two-reviews-in-one column critiquing shows from last March, my esteemed editor, Stephen Hanks quoted the poet Robert Browning: “A man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's a heaven for?” Hanks pointed out that Browning's famous line is about setting goals, striving, and ambition, all of which are commendable desires. But, alas, in this particular review he felt the two singers in question “fell short.” One of those singers was Shana Farr and the show she has been performing throughout the past year, In The Still of the Night: Music of Noel Coward and Cole Porter. So here we are a year later, immersed in the revelry of the 2015 award season celebrating excellence in cabaret, and Farr's uniquely theatrical homage to Coward and Porter has recently won her the 2015 Bistro Award for “Outstanding Concept Show.” In spite of my editor's previous reservations about this show, he was open to hearing another perspective—whether positive or negative—so off to the Laurie Beechman Theatre I ventured on the last day of February to find out for myself whether Shana's show was truly award-worthy. Sorry, oh editor of mine, but you might have missed the boat on this one.

'Losing to Win' author Randy Jernigan has signed to reissue his first book of love stories and is in negotiations with a major film company who has made an offer for his screenplay, 'Willing to Love.' The screenplay is an adaptation of a short story Jernigan published in an American magazine in 2007 and was recently fleshed out into a film treatment for Jernigan's agency to shop around. 'It didn't take long before we had a few production houses asking about the piece,' said Jernigan's agency rep Joel Lockwood. 'It was a popular story for the magazine and I'm confident it will be a money-maker for the film company. I have no doubt.' Lockwood is staying mum as to who they are negotiating with, as well as other details, but does add that two names have been attached to the project. A director and actor who both helped sell the project to the studio and will come with the package. Meanwhile, the busy writer is spreading his creative wings. According to Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) Jernigan will take on a supporting role of Jesse Henshall in the new ICE Production Partners comedy, 'The Plot Thickens' later this year. Jernigan was also in the lead role in a slasher short that recently won 2nd place in a new San Diego film festival. "This Thing Called Love" will be reissued later this year through Creative Partners Books.
