On the heels of Black History Month comes When We Were Colored: A Mother's Story, a play by Sacramento's own Ginger Rutland that is adapted from a memoir that her mother, Eva Rutland, wrote. The memoir was originally titled 'The Trouble With Being a Mama' and was first published in 1964. It highlighted the fact that all mothers are the same when it comes to their children-indeed, Eva wrote it to show white mothers that her children were 'just as precious and fragile' as theirs. What was not the same were the injustices that families like Eva's had to go through.

Rod Serling's television anthology series The Twilight Zone was a popular and critical success when it ran on CBS for five seasons from 1959 to 1964, shot entirely in black and white. The series introduced many Americans to appreciate stories in various genres including fantasy, science fiction, suspense, horror and psychological thrillers, often concluding with a macabre or unexpected twist, usually ending with a moral explained by the writer himself. It has remained so popular that you can often find The Twilight Zone marathons running on various television stations, especially on holidays. As a fan of the show, I often watch episodes when they are shown, keeping my The Twilight Zone Companion handbook close by to check on facts and cast information from each episode. So I made plans to attend when I heard Theatre 40 was going to be presenting ROD SERLING'S STORIES FROM THE ZONE adapted and co-directed by multiple Ovation Award winning set designer Jeff G. Rack and Charlie Mount.

IN ANOTHER ROOM is a site-specific immersive play in which guests will wander the rooms of a purportedly haunted house in Culver City, coming face to face with various souls that have lived and died and suffered tragedy within its walls. After meeting with two hosts, one of whom will take your photo to be sure your soul is clear enough to enter the house without disrupting the spirits there, a ploy of course as the photos will become part of the show later on, guests are invited to knock on the front door for entrance into the evening's adventure.

When the famous musical film “Mary Poppins” premiered in 1964, no one could have predicted the important role it would play in film history. Starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, the film combined live action animation with songs written and composed by the Sherman Brothers. Mary Poppins, played by Julie Andrews in her feature film debut, also produced one of film's most memorable songs of all time. There isn't anyone who has seen the Disney classic that can't walk away to whistle or sing those famous lyrics - “Just a Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down…”
