Audiences familiar with Signature Theatre know that it is not uncommon for Matthew Gardiner to wear dual hats as both a musical's director and choreographer. However, having dual actors tackle the lead role brings its own set of unique challenges.

Zawe Ashton's incredible 2019 brings to the plate the second piece she's written in her career. It took a long, winding road that spanned 11 years and more than a few attempts, but for all the women who thought they were Mad finally made it. Now, it's receiving his world premiere in London before opening almost simultaneously Off-Broadway too. Jo McInnes directs the play, which oozes with metaphors and allegoric meaning; the small, daily aggressions that black women have to endure are put together to form a universal experience infused with just the right amount of magic.

Here is the scenario. Imagine going to a community theatre in Arlington, VA to see a show that requires a good size choir and a fourteen-piece orchestra. I imagine some of you might think that the company was crazy. I'm here to tell you that, in the case of The Arlington Players' 68th season opener The Hunchback of Notre Dame, you would be totally wrong. Never assume anything until you witness it. The production indeed features a twenty-member choir and it utilizes Michael Starobin's full orchestration but besides that, the production overall is as good as I've seen from some professional theatre companies. Yes, you read that right folks.

Hi everyone! I'm so glad to be back for another week of writing for Broadway World! This week I'm talking about the ways social media has impacted modern theatre and the experiences surrounding it. Social media has made shows more accessible, more popular with younger audiences, and in some cases, social media has even brought shows from little regional theatres all the way to Broadway itself.

Killian and the Comeback Kids is a movie about the power of music. It's the story of a bi-racial man who lands back in his hometown in rural America after an exorbitantly priced education. Back in his failing hometown, a chance encounter with a childhood acquaintance gives the summer new direction. The two throw together a rag-tag band of other 'failed' locals for one shot to play the huge local music festival. It's a story of hopes, dreams and music.

Hong Kong Dance Company invites Beijing Dance Academy to collaborate again, doing two shows at two weekends, BEAUTY BEYOND WORDS: ANCIENT CHINESE DANCE CLASSICS, performed at Shatin Town Hall at last weekend, and the revival of DREAM OF THE PAST at Hong Kong Cultural Centre at the coming weekend. I saw BEAUTY BEYOND WORDS, and it was an exciting night for me as finally, Hong Kong Dance Company has regained her strength of being a dance company focusing on traditional Chinese dance after two wandering years.

According to Mo Gaffney, she and Kathy Najimy still think they are the funniest people on the planet. And if the play PARALLEL LIVES is any indication, they just might be. Najimy and Gaffney (better known as Kathy and Mo) first performed PARALLEL LIVES, a series of comedy sketches they penned about women, in 1983 at The Old Town Theatre in San Diego. Six years later, they opened the show off-Broadway and in 1991, PARALLEL LIVES became an HBO special. PARALLEL LIVES opens this weekend at Burning Coal Theatre as part of The Women's Theatre Festival. In this production, the roles originated by Gaffney and Najimy are being played by the Keith Liles and Emily Levinstone. While there is no through-line to PARALLEL LIVES per se, the common thread that ties these sketches together is one of acceptance and fundamental human rights, strikingly contemporary and relevant themes for a piece first performed over 30 years ago. And although some of the sketches work better than others, and the play runs long at just over two hours, there is enough thought-provoking funny material to make PARALLEL LIVES worthy of a girl's, err should I say women's, night out.

One would think a writer would be mad to take two people, lock them on a porch, and force them to talk through multiple games of gin rummy to entertain an audience. That is exactly what The Beckwith Theatre Company does with its production of "The Gin Game".

In the opening scene of PARALLEL LIVES, two Supreme Beings plan the beginning of the world with the relish of two slightly sadistic suburban wives decorating a living room. From this moment, the audience is whisked through a series of skits that catapult them into the outrageous universe of comediennes Kathy Najimy and Maureen (Mo) Gaffney. Najimy and Gaffney first performed PARALLEL LIVES in 1983 at The Old Town Theatre in San Diego. Six years later, they opened the show off-Broadway at The Westside Theatre in New York and in 1991, PARALLEL LIVES became an HBO special. Later this month, Emily Levinstone and Keith Liles step into Kathy and Mo's shoes for the opening of PARALLEL LIVES at Burning Coal Theatre as part of the North Carolina Women's Theatre Festival. Judy Long, who is making her Raleigh directorial debut, says the show covers themes that are relevant today as they were 35 years ago, including women's rights, LGBTQ rights, and acceptance. Gaffney and Long opened up about the relevancy of PARALLEL LIVES 35 years later.

WOW is the word right now, as Grease, with direction and musical staging by Michael Hamilton, plays at Stages St. Louis! In this automatic, systematic, hyyyydromatic show, it's 1950s USA, and a new school year is beginning at Rydel High. A feisty Miss Lynch (Kendra Lynn Lucas) greets us as her students with the morning announcements (and theatre etiquette, too a?" thank you Miss Lynch), using a training clicker to keep us in check lest we get too rowdy. She knows her students, after all. Moving into the musical, we encounter Sandy Dumbrowski (Summerisa Bell Stevens) and Danny Zuko (Sam Harvey), who met at the beach over summer break and had a sweet little romance. Both will be attending Rydel for their senior year, unbeknownst to one other, so that makes for a scrumptiously awkward...

Eighty percent of having a successful show is casting. If you have the right cast, even the dullest show can shine. However, that means the opposite is also true. You can have a good play, such as Eisa Davis' a?oeBulrushera??, currently being offered from Intiman Theatre, but if the cast isn't there, then neither is the decent storytelling. In the case of Intiman's show, the cast is mostly there, but one glaring weak link sapped the energy and emotion from a piece that should be filled with energy and emotion.
