Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George opened at Santa Fe Playhouse on Saturday and all I can say is wow. The 1984 musical features music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by James Lapin.  Inspired by the French pointillist  painter Georges Seurat’s painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, the plot revolves around George (deftly played by Playhouse regular David Stallings), who immerses himself deeply in painting his masterpiece, and his great-grandson (also named George, also played by Stallings), a conflicted and cynical contemporary artist.

This is neither a tribute concert to Queen nor a biography of their lives. Rinaldo Alessandrini and Concerto Italiano continue their exploration of 17th century Italian motets with a new disc of works by composer Alessandro Stradella (1643-1682), out on Naïve Classiques on June 21, 2024. The album includes Stradella’s Symphonias in D Major and F Major. Except for Stradella’s Exultate in Deo fideles, all of the motets on the album are world premiere recordings.  

The Boston Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Andris Nelsons have announced the appointment of violinist Nathan Cole as the orchestra's new concertmaster. Cole will take the Charles Munch chair at the start of the BSO's 2024 Tanglewood season in July, becoming the orchestra's 11th concertmaster since its founding in 1881.
