This April, PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE re-examines the war to make the world 'safe for democracy' through new scholarship, recently discovered documents and footage, and fresh voices.

The Anthropologists return hot off a successful run of No Man's Land to honor the the centennial of the 1917 Lower East Side food riots with a special Concert Reading of their original 2009 play Give Us Bread on Sunday, March 19 at 2PM at the University Settlement (184 Eldridge Street at the corner of Rivington, New York, NY 10002).  This will also be a Benefit for the company, who will premiere its newest work, This Sinking Island, at the University Settlement in Fall 2017. The venue is accessible. Tickets are $35 ($40 at the door) and include the performance followed by a reception.

Directed by Aimee Todoroff and Tonya Pinkins and now in performances at the Gloria Maddox Theatre, Visionary Voices begins with Susan Glaspell's Trifles, followed by Marita Bonner's Exit: An Illusion and ending with Glaspell's The People - three wonderful plays that are more engaging and poignant in their single acts than many full length shows ever have the opportunity of being. All three plays take place at or near the start of the twentieth century, craftily combining themes as relevant today as they were then - collaborating with suspenseful plots, troubled characters and questionable motives that, when put together, show just how clever Todoroff and Pinkins are. In both the structure of this show as a whole and the effect it has on the audience, the truth here is that Visionary Voices is more than a statement - it is definitely a production worth your time.

Gary Naylor sees an ambitious production that runs parallel storylines but doesn't solve the considerable problems so caused.

His day job is as associate justice of the Second District, Division Six of the California Courts of Appeal, but Steve Perren's passion for the stage has seen him appear in a variety of shows in Ventura County over the years. He played founding father Roger Sherman in Cabrillo Music Theatre's 2012 production of 1776 and has also appeared in numerous operettas staged by the Ventura County Gilbert and Sullivan Repertoire Company. In Panic! Productions' Parade, currently playing at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, Perren is ideally suited for the part of Judge Leonard S. Roan, who presides over the trial of accused child murderer Leo Frank. Parade deals with the real-life arrest and trial of Frank (played by Joshua Finkel), a Georgia factory superintendent who was accused of murdering 13-year-old factory worker Mary Phagan in 1913. We sat down with Steve during a break in rehearsals for the show, and talked about his unique perspective as an actor who also shares the occupation of the character he portrays.
