It's hard to believe that it's been over 40 years now since a little revue that started at New York's Manhattan Theatre Club took Broadway by storm. The show was Ain't Misbehavin' and if you didn't know who composer Thomas “Fats” Waller was before, you did after seeing this show. It also made Nell Carter a star and garnered her a television series called Gimme a Break. Besides Carter the cast was comprised of Charlaine Woodard, Armelia McQueen, Andre De Shields, and Ken Page. When the original cast returned for a Broadway revival of the show in the 80's, Nell Carter received star billing even though the show is truly an ensemble piece. Ah, the power of television.

Rose Theatre Kingston today announces the full cast for Hansel & Gretel, a new festive version with original music. Director of Learning and Participation, Ciaran McConville, returns with a new version of the Brothers' Grimm classic following last year's successful adaptation of Alice in Winterland. Rosie Jones directs a cast of local young actors from the Rose Youth Theatre led by a team of professional actors including Devon Black (Mother/Bear/Townsperson), Vanessa Fisher (Red/Townsperson), Elliot Fitzpatrick (Otto/Kabeljau), J.J. Henry (Gerhardt/Blue) and Georgina White (Circe). The production opens on Friday 14 December, with previews from Thursday 6 December, and runs until Sunday 6 January 2019.

In April 2018, the New World Symphony joined The Sphinx Organization and the League of American Orchestras in announcing their new partnership, the National Alliance for Audition Support (NAAS), which is a field-wide initiative with the long-term goal of increasing diversity in American orchestras. Supported by a four-year, $1.8 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Alliance offers a holistic and personalized array of support to Black and Latinx musicians to develop their audition skills, increase their participation in auditions, and ultimately, increase their representation in orchestras.

The orchestra will perform Bernstein's score from the 1954 Oscar award-winning film, On the Waterfront, which ranks eighth on the American Film Institute's Top 100 list. The orchestra will be conducted by Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski who was mentored by Bernstein. The concert will begin with a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner, conducted by Eliot Pfanstiehl, former CEO and founder of the Strathmore Hall Foundation Inc. The eight-time Oscar-winning re-mastered film, directed by Elia Kazan, stars Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, and Eva Marie Saint, and will be shown in high-definition with the original dialogue intact. Ticket prices are $35-$85 and are free for young people age 7-17.
