Sophocles' timeless tragedy receives a gripping contemporary reimagining in Robert Icke's internationally acclaimed adaptation, opening July 4 at São Paulo's MASP Auditorium. Directed by Clara Carvalho, the production transforms the ancient myth into a high-stakes political thriller set on election night, as a charismatic candidate's search for the truth threatens to destroy his career, his family, and his identity. Starring Sergio Mastropasqua as Oedipus and Clarisse Abujamra as a newly empowered Jocasta, the Brazilian staging combines psychological suspense with striking contemporary design inspired by Lina Bo Bardi's iconic architecture. Following acclaimed productions in London's West End and on Broadway, Icke's award-winning adaptation arrives in Brazil in a powerful new production running through September 6.
