Last Saturday Opera Theatre of St. Louis premiered a new adaptation of Scott Joplin’s legendary opera Treemonisha.  It is a bright and worthy addition to our recent flurry of adoration of some of America’s major black composers;  the Black Rep closed their stunningly fine evening of Eubie Blake’s music three days earlier.

Of all the theatre directors that the Met has marshalled into its forces, Simon McBurney--who brought his version of Mozart’s DIE ZAUBERFLOTE (THE MAGIC FLUTE) to the Met on Friday in his house debut--may be the most successful in melding music and theatre, storytelling and visual elements.

National Philharmonic (NatPhil) announced its 2023-2024 Season, which includes six classical programs conducted by Music Director Piotr Gajewski, one classical concert led by guest conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson, and two choral performances presented in partnership with The Washington Chorus (TWC) and conducted by TWC Artistic Director Eugene Rogers. All season concerts will be held at The Music Center at Strathmore, the Orchestra’s longstanding home in Montgomery County.

The hit show, Gunfight at the Not-So-OK Saloon, is returning to the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Gunfight at the Not-So-OK Saloon is a Gilbert and Sullivan-styled musical comedy set in the Old Wild West with a modern spin.

While I’ve always been bothered by the cruelties and misogyny of the main character, Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI has (musically) been my favorite of the composer’s operas, though either casting or design has been a regular issue in bringing off the work at its best. Happily, the Met’s new production by Belgian provocateur Ivo van Hove is a success for me, with a cast filled with wonderful singers--and the Met orchestra and chorus sounding great under debutante Nathalie Stutzmann.

Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival has announced the complete principal casts, creative teams, and events planned for the previously announced summer season.

NAATCO will begin performances for the Off-Broadway premiere of Hansol Jung’s modern verse translation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the classic tale of star-crossed lovers.  Jung will co-direct Romeo and Juliet with Dustin Wills.

In the upcoming 2023-2024 season, Jan Vandenhouwe will present no fewer than six world-premiering creations. 

​​​​​​​Ivo van Hove, the Tony Award–winning director of Broadway's A View from the Bridge, makes a major Met debut with Mozart's Don Giovanni (May 5–June 2), re-setting the familiar tale of deceit and damnation in an abstract architectural landscape and shining a light into the work's dark corners.

Many musicians were out of work in 2020, and during a time of uncertainty and unemployment, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke raised funds to commission over 30 artists to create 17 new songs. These composers and librettists collaborated with her to create the GRAMMY-nominated album how do i find you.

The Greek National Opera (GNO) presents leading French director Olivier Py's new production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly, following his acclaimed production of Berg's Wozzeck at GNO in 2020. Olivier Py, who has directed more than 40 operas around the world, embarks on his first staging of Madama Butterfly with a production that places the orchestra onstage and fills the outdoor venue with the aesthetics and colors of America and Japan.

The GB Public's ten-week schedule begins in the Liebowitz black box theater with the American premiere of The Stones, June 15 to July 2, starring Ryan Winkles as Nick.
