En 1980 se convirtió en el primer latinoamericano en recibir el prestigiado Premio Pritzker, considerado el Nobel de la arquitectura mundial. La Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno de México y el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (Inbal) lo recuerdan al cumplirse, este 22 de noviembre, el 35 aniversario de su fallecimiento.
