In recognition of April as Jazz Appreciation Month the Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC) hosts  a discussion with Dr. Chris Washburne and BMHC co-artistic director Bobby Sanabria  about Washburne's latest book, Latin Jazz: The Other Jazz. This discussion will focus on why this genre of jazz is deserving of more appreciation from the jazz world.

Cackle, giggle, snicker, chuckle—however you like to laugh, these comedians will have you cracking up. Settle in for an evening of side-splitting comedy during SOPAC's monthly Laughs in the Loft stand-up series. Hosted by local comedian Joe Larson, each show features several comedians in a New York City-style showcase. Laughs in the Loft is held every first Wednesday of the month.

Lucia di Lammermoor is undoubtedly, together with L’elisir d’amore, the most famous opera by Gaetano Donizetti and the most performed throughout the world. Thanks to a 1985 donation by the Perolari family, the city of Bergamo was able to acquire the autograph score of this opera, which was first performed at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples in 1835. The score is preserved in the Mai Library. In a few weeks this precious manuscript will travel across the ocean for the first time to be exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York directed by Fabio Finotti on the occasion of the new, highly anticipated production of Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera. The production will be conducted by Riccardo Frizza, who is also the music director of the Donizetti Opera Festival in Bergamo .

San Diego Repertory Theatre (San Diego REP) announced that Sam Woodhouse will step down as Artistic Director in September 2022 after leading the company for 46 years. At the end of this season, San Diego REP will have produced 333 productions under Woodhouse’s leadership - more than 50 of them were world premieres.

Today's episode features Broadway favorite Andréa Burns. 'My very first professional job was playing 'Maria' in West Side Story on a European tour. I left school to do it. It kinda became my college education. Instead of going to school I was at West Side U,' Burns explained in the episode. 'Some many things happened... I got my Equity card, I met my future husband (who played Tony), and now we have a son who is half-Jet half-Shark! [The show] is incredibly meaningful to me.'

The Royal Opera House will continue its first full Season since 2019 with a selection of world class productions throughout 2022, showcasing the very best of opera and ballet.  In anticipation of the new year, here are a selection of upcoming world premieres and classic revivals from The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet.

The Baryshnikov Arts Center will present the world premiere of gloria rehearsal by New York City-based dance artists Molly Lieber and Eleanor Smith. The presentation, part of BAC's Fall 2021 Digital Season, is free and available to watch on demand from Monday, January 10, at 5pm ET, until Monday, January 24, at 5pm.

Exciting jazz programming is on the slate at Birdland Jazz Club and Birdland Theater running December 13 - December 26. 

The series features three Tony Award® winners and critically-acclaimed powerhouse talents: Stephanie J. Block (The Cher Show) on January 7; Santino Fontana (Tootsie) on February 5; and Laura Benanti (Gypsy) on March 26.

Off the heels of several game-changing announcements this year, leading independent music distributor Symphonic Distribution has revealed that they are ending 2021 with a new executive hire. Symphonic's new VP of Product, Ali Lieberman brings over a decade of industry experience to the table.

In 2021, PRC hosted more artist residencies than ever before, welcoming more than 80 artists to the Center, and will open applications for additional residency opportunities through its RETREAT & RESTORE program on December 7, 2021 for two March 2022 residencies.

Originally scheduled back in September, the wait was worth it to hear Laura Benanti sing selections from her roles on Broadway and a few tracks from her 2020 self-titled studio album in her debut Cabaret at the Center which was part uproarious stand-up comedy act, and part beguiling Broadway/Jazz concert.
