New England Premiere Opens Gloucester Stage 2017 Season

Gloucester Stage Company kicks off its 38th season of professional theater on Cape Ann with the New England Premiere of John Kolvenbach's Bank Job from May 19 through June 10 at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. For two brothers, Russell and Tracey, new to the armed robbery industry, what seems like easy money turns out to be a lot more difficult than it looks in the movies in John Kolvenbach's hilarious Bank Job. When heist plans A and B (and C through F) fail, the brothers find themselves locked in the executive bathroom with no way out and no choice but to depend on a brave bank teller, a guileless cop, and the man in the shadows who put them up to the whole thing. A fun comedy, Bank Job is about the holes we dig ourselves into-and the unexpected comrades we trust to dig us out. Under the auspices of GRoW @ The Wallis, The Wallis Youth Theater Company presents its second theater production of the 2016-17 season, playwright Gareth Jandrell's Thebes, which makes its North American premiere on Saturday, June 10 at 8pm and Sunday, June 11 at 6pm at The Wallis in Beverly Hills. Ravaged by climate change and shaken by political turmoil, the citizens of Thebes must unite in order to revolutionize their democracy. From Oedipus to Antigone, the story of Thebes  remains a fascinating exploration of fate, morality and power, two and a half thousand years after the saga was originally written. Thebes is directed by Madeleine Dahm, with lighting design by Bosco Flanagan, recently named Lighting Designer of the Year by Los Angeles' Stage Raw. DTC Awarded $30k from National Endowment for the Arts

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in the NEA's second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $30,000 to Dallas Theater Center (DTC) to support the upcoming world-premiere production of Hood: The Robin Hood Musical Adventure. The NEA received 1,728 Art Works applications and will make 1,029 grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. (more...)

Toronto Fringe Sees Record Breaking Festival Again!

It's been a banner year for Fringe. The 2017 Toronto Fringe Festival was the highest selling festival in its 29-year history, selling 68,312 tickets to theatre-lovers. Since Fringe returns 100% of the net box office to its 160 producing companies, this means that we will deposit a record $519,707 into the bank accounts of indie artists in the coming weeks. This is the first time Toronto Fringe has broken over $500,000 in its payout to artists. (more...)

Not every new musical can be a HAMILTON, but that's exactly what makes the eclectic genre of American musical theatre thrive and bloom. However, there are a few necessary, key ingredients in creating musical theatre magic, including relatable principal characters and some heartfelt showtunes. And, although Dallas Theater Center's efforts to produce an edgy new musical based on the Robin Hood folklore don't ever get past the surface of the legendary story, there's still something irresistible about being in the room where a new work is being created. In a moderated panel discussion, Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company members Alex Organ and Liz Mikel will discuss their experiences, and how they have informed their approach to the characters they portray in Miller, Mississippi.
