Valley Maker, the folk project of Seattle songwriter Austin Crane, will release his new album Rhododendron in two weeks, and today he shares the video for his new single 'Beautiful Birds Flying,' which was produced by Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi. Crane says of the song, 'I wrote it almost immediately after hearing about the horrific Mother Emanuel Church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina - which is a city I love in the state where I grew up... The song wrestles with the presence/recurrence of violence in the world and how to respond to that - feeling tendencies towards escapism, while also acknowledging an inevitable rootedness in places and patterns that are complicit.'

The San Diego Symphony's annual January Festival returns in its fourth year entitled, Hearing the Future. Throughout the festival, which runs January 9 - 27, 2019, the organization explores and celebrates the power of music and art to give voice to the evolution and revolutions in the world at large. The festival will also explore the way music from the past - from Haydn, Beethoven and Berlioz to the creators of African-American spirituals - engaged with the most urgent issues of their time.

Anemone might be the  brainchild of Montreal's Chloé Soldevila but it's the chemistry between each band member that really brings the band to life. Today the band is announcing their debut album Beat My Distance on Luminelle Records. To celebrate they are releasing a new song from the album titled 'Sunshine (Back To The Start).' Soldevila explains the song is about 'Overcoming the pattern of falling in love with someone who is unworthy, but that you still believed it could work. I called it 'Sunshine' because this song should resonate positively - it is about focusing on the bright side and coming out a stronger person; daydreaming of better, sunnier days.' Flaunt Magazine shared the song today, calling it '...perfect to accompany this Indian Summer.'

SHEER MAG return with their sophomore album, A Distant Call. They're still writing about surviving our current hellscape, but this time around, the politics get extra-personal. It's heavy power-pop so sleek it gleams. 'We've been waiting to write these songs since we started the band and we were able to take these experiences and build a story out of them,' notes front woman Tina Halladay. The album verges on being a concept piece, and the protagonist resembles Halladay herself. The songs document a particularly alienating time in her life when she was laid off from a job. Broke and newly single, her father (with whom she had a fraught relationship) passed away, leaving her with more wounds than felt possible to heal. The album's lead single 'Blood From A Stone' which was released today, kicks off the narrative of the album proper. It flashes back to Tina's life from a few years back and sets up the arc for the rest of the record.

The 17 tunes on this recording explore phases of romance from first glance, in “Blue Moon,” to a missed chance, in “Cry Me a River.” Most of the wide-ranging material presented here was originally recorded by singer/actress Julie London, along with a couple of offerings that Stanley feels would have been perfect for the sultry songstress, such as “It's Impossible,” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
