Little House on the Prairie

Little House on the Prairie has remained one of the most popular and beloved celebrations of pioneering America since Laura Ingalls Wilder published the first book of her classic series 75 years ago. Now the inspirational stories cross into yet another frontier in an uplifting new musical. Melissa Gilbert, who we all knew as Laura for 10 years in the much-loved television series is now all grown up and playing Ma.

Through the magic of live theatre, the musical follows the Ingalls familys journey westward and settlement in DeSmet, South Dakota where Ma and Pa Ingalls hoped to make a better life for their children. It tells the story of their struggle to keep their land claim. In story, song and dance, we see the Ingalls suffering the hardships of winter blizzards and prairie fires as well as rejoicing in the settlement of land and town. Most of all, the story follows Laura as she grows from the wild child who loved to run free into a woman who embraces the responsibilities of her own future while struggling to remain true to herself.

Recommended for the whole family, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, THE MUSICAL brings the joys and sorrows of family life during the settlement of the prairie to contemporary America. Families will continue to identify with these life affirming stories that celebrate the pioneering spirit and the core values on which this country was founded a spirit that resonates within each of us today.

The show is directed by Francesca Zambello (Disneys The Little Mermaid), the music has been created by Academy Award winner, Rachel Portman, and the book was written by Rachel Sheinkin (Tony Award for SPELLING BEE) with lyrics by Donna di Novelli. LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, THE MUSICAL premiered at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, MN.

Gather round, children, this is one of my favorite stories in #TCTheater. Not that long ago, in a land not too far away, a couple moved home to Minnesota from NYC to start a theater company. Shortly after doing so, the rights to the holiday show they were planning were pulled a few weeks before rehearsal was set to begin. Luckily, one of them was a playwright, so she wrote a play. That play was a comedy about a couple that moved to a small town in Minnesota from NYC to run a theater company, when the rights to their holiday play were pulled the night before opening. They say write what you know, and Jessica Lind Peterson did just that, to great success. She mixed her and Yellow Tree Theatre co-founder Jason Peterson's story together with Minnesota humor, soap operas, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, a handful of quirky characters, and a bearded dragon, put it all in a crock pot to simmer, and something delicious was born. Now, ten years later, Yellow Tree's holiday show is a huge hit every year and anchors their season to be able to produce some extraordinary and diverse work year-round. There have been two installments of MIRACLE ON CHRISTMAS LAKE, as well as two stand-alone plays A HUNTING SHACK CHRISTMAS and A GONE FISHIN' CHRISTMAS. For their 11th season they're returning to where it all began, the original MIRACLE ON CHRISTMAS LAKE with most of the original cast. This was my 6th time seeing some iteration of the CHRISTMAS LAKE franchise, and I love the silly, ridiculous, sweet, wonderful mess even more each time I see it. The show continues through the end of December, but as I mentioned it's always hugely popular, so get your tickets soon!
