Sundance Film Festival Announces Juries, Awards Night Host

Sundance Institute will gather 20 celebrated and revered expert voices across film, art, culture and science to award feature-length and short films shown at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival with 12 prizes, announced at a ceremony February 2 that will be livestreamed at sundance.org and on YouTube. Short Film Awards will be announced at a separate ceremony on January 29 and will also be livestreamed. The Festival takes place January 24 through February 3 in Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance, Utah.

After a few years on ice, Bob Sinclar's Africanism label is making its grand return. Initially launched in 2001 in collaboration with DJ Gregory, the label has now reemerged under the wing of Amsterdam-based record label Armada Music to create a new wave with fresh productions and instant classics, of which Erik Hagleton's 'City Of Gold' is the first.

Dessa To Join Minnesota Orchestra for March 2019 Performances; Plus Recording Live for Doomtree Records

Rapper-singer-essayist Dessa returns to Orchestra Hall this March for two performances recorded live with the Minnesota Orchestra, led by Principal Conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall Sarah Hicks. Dessa will perform fan favorites and debut brand-new material. The forthcoming album, slated for release later in 2019, will be produced by Lazerbeak and Andy Thompson for Doomtree Records.

Grammy nominee Mark Hummel returns, kicking off the new year with the latest iteration of his all-star blues revue, the 2019 Southern Blues Harp Blowout. As always, his guests are stellar: Grammy Award-winner Bobby Rush is a ten-time Blues Music Award winner, B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, and Rolling Stone "King of the Chitlin' Circuit" winner. Alabama harpman James Harman- one of the great performers, writers and unique characters in the blues today - has employed some of the all-time great blues musicians in his bands. Kenny Neal is a second-generation southern Louisiana bluesman, 2017 Grammy nominee and winner of two Blues Music Awards for his Bloodline recording. And Jumpin' Johnny Sansone studied harmonica with Junior Wells and James Cotton; his former band Jumpin Johnny's Blues Party was the foundation of the New Orleans-based The Iguanas. Rounding out the good times is blues supergroup Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue.

Queens-based Rude Grooms (www.rudegrooms.com) announced details for their production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, led by actor-manager Montgomery Sutton (Twelfth Night at Shakespeare's Globe; Much Ado About Nothing with Rude Grooms), produced in partnership with Long Island City Artists at the Plaxall Gallery and sponsored by Mikkeller Brewing NYC. The show runs January 4-6 at the Plaxall Gallery (5-25 46th Avenue, LIC) at 7:30pm, with a Twelfth Night Party beginning at 6:30pm each night for VIP ticket holders featuring a variety of musical guests to be announced in the coming days. The story centers on Oliver Henry III (played by Geoff Blanchette), a small-time crook turned vaudeville theater owner. From humble beginnings in England, he immigrates to America in search of happiness and fast cash. He becomes acquainted with people from all walks of life, from burlesque performers, mimes, hobos to classy flapper girls. As his fortunes rise his life spins out of control. Much of the storyline is a reflection on current social issues that burden our society today.

The Jewish Museum will present Martha Rosler: Irrespective, a survey exhibition of the work of the influential artist Martha Rosler, from November 2, 2018, through March 3, 2019. Rosler is considered one of the strongest and most resolute artistic voices of her generation; she is also a prolific writer, lecturer, professor, and advocate for social justice. She skillfully employs diverse materials to address pressing matters of her time, including war, gender roles, gentrification, inequality, and labor. From her feminist photomontages of the 1960s and 1970s to her large-scale installations, Rosler's vital work reflects an enduring and passionate vision.

When the Met's literary advisor asked Nicholas Wright what he thought about doing the libretto for MARNIE, he said yes because he was really interested in working with composer Nico Muhly and Michael Mayer. He was somewhat reserved, however, about whether it was a good opera subject. That was understandable, of course, when he admitted, laughing, a case of mistaken identity.
