David Ives’s new version of Georges Feydeau’s farce, A Flea in Her Ear is an ambitious three-act play for any small theater, but the Brookfield Theatre more than rises to it. Named one of the greatest farces ever written, it takes a lot to mount the play. You need a stage large enough to accommodate a cast of 14 players and part of a set that turns.

Marnie never chose to be a mum. She loves her 4-year-old and would die for him, but he’s not what she expected him to be. When she’s filmed calling him a see-you-next-Tuesday on a plane back from Dubai, the video immediately goes viral. With her lowest moment immortalised for everybody in the world to see and judge, Marnie explores the ambivalence of motherhood. Written and performed by Anna Morris, Son of a Bitch exposes the casualties of virality, unpicking societal expectations to ask an open question: why do we have children?

On Friday, February 21st, I had the pleasure of seeing one of my all-time favorite musicals, GUYS AND DOLLS wonderfully performed at Center Stage Theatre in Shelton, CT. This musical features music by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, based on characters created by Damon Runyon. Led by director and musical director Liz Muller and enhanced by choreographers Brandy and Michael Bailey, this cast entertained the packed house who all seemed to enjoy this performance, as I did!

With a starry The Seagull opening soon at The Barbican, the peerless playwright is in vogue right now, his unstable worlds of uneasy transition chiming with the nervous times. On the banks of the Thames, the third of the fab four tragedies, Three Sisters, (or should that be comedies?) is receiving rave reviews. BroadwayWorld's Gary Naylor sat down with Shannon Tarbet, who plays Masha, to talk about the great Russian's debut in the home of the great Englishman.

Unconditional: A Musical Memoir, written by and starring Margot Rose is a true story of dedication, loss, community, and love, in which two women, already in their mid-forties, go to extraordinary lengths to have kids. Presented at the Skylight Theatre 2/15 thru 3/9, I decided to speak with Margot about her experience as a gay mother and the grief which led to the creation of it.

CATS…Now and Forever. That catchphrase of marketing served the blockbuster Broadway musical well. The show ran for over 18 years, and although often maligned, is indelibly chiseled into the canon of classic musicals. It introduced countless tourists to an immersive theatrical experience, never seen before. In 1982 the Winter Garden Theatre was literally transformed into a larger than life sized back alley, with actors dressed as cats crawling through the audience and climbing across the mezzanine rails. The hit song “Memory” earned Betty Buckley a TONY Award for her portrayal of Grizabella, and Andrew Lloyd Weber cemented his role as blockbuster composer. He was fresh off of the success of EVITA and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA would be his next huge hit.

There is no better time than now for Music Theatre of Connecticut’s production of Moon Over Buffalo. Or maybe playwright Ken Ludwig should have called it Loons Over Buffalo. This slapstick comedy is sidesplittingly funny about a fading stage couple who still dream of fame and fortune but are reduced to performing repertory in slumping venues.

Sometimes I get to see a very good production of a very good play, and I go home feeling satisfied. As a reviewer, I sometimes have to see that same play again at another theatre with an entirely different cast and an entirely different directorial approach. It’s a bit like the remake of a classic. At first you wonder why it needs to be remade, and then having already seen what you consider the gold star, the outcome is less satisfactory.
