As the San Francisco Bay Area reaches six months of sheltering-in-place, the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for mental health have become more prevalent than ever. In response, The Marsh is bringing back virtual LIVE performances (with post-event discussions) of Brian Copelanda??s captivating drama a?oeThe Waiting Period.a?? This deeply moving and surprisingly funny work that outlines his own struggles with depression and suicidal thought has been shown to literally save lives. All performances are offered free of charge. Please visit The Marsh website for additional information. As people around the world continue to navigate the potential health and financial impacts of the ongoing pandemic, Copeland knew that offering performances of a?oeThe Waiting Perioda?? would provide a safe space and support system for those in need during these trying times. BroadwayWorld had the pleasure of speaking with Copeland twice in recent months about the show and his long, fascinating career. Miss Mona Stangley and her Girls have arrived in Downtown Arlington to have a darn-tootin' great time opening Theatre Arlington's 47th season with the award-winning musical, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. This charming, fun-loving musical by Carol Hall, Larry L. King and Peter Masterson, based loosely on the real-life Chicken Ranch in La Grange, Texas, recounts the story of Miss Mona's cozy little brothel that was popular with senators, mayors and football teams and protected by the local sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd. Times are good for Miss Mona's Girls until a TV evangelist's cameras and righteous indignation interfere. The lively tale is told with a bit of bawdy humor and high-energy production numbers, with sweet ballads and sentimentality thrown in, and is meant for mature audiences but as Miss Mona says, a?oethere's nothing dirty going on.a??

Actor-singer-dancer-choreographer Adam Fleming became a part of Broadway history originating the roles of Sketch in Hairspray and Lucas in Bare. In 2005, he starred in David Brind and Adam Salky's acclaimed short film, Dare, about two teenage boys' tense, spark-filled encounter in a pool following high school play practice. Dare gained a cult following as part of Strand Releasing's 'Boys Life' series and ultimately achieved worldwide popularity via more than 12 Million views on Youtube. The fan fervor (and fan fiction!) eventually inspired a sequel, ten years later. The original and the sequel are now being presented together as The Dare Project and attracting new legions of fans.

The National (non-equity) Tour of THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL settled in at the Boch Center's Wang Theatre this week and brought out families and children raised on the beloved Nickelodeon series. Joining a long list of animated shows adapted into Broadway musicals, this one is set apart by the clever collaboration with a wide variety of popular artists who composed individual songs, seamlessly curated, orchestrated, and arranged by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winner Tom Kitt (of Next to Normal). Based on the television series by Stephen Hillenburg, it was conceived and directed by Tina Landau and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, but the eclectic score is the crème de la crème of THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL.

The Chicken Ranch has shut down and is making the way for the Hundred Acre Wood in downtown Arlington, as Theatre Arlington turns their attention to children and families, with the musical, Winnie the Pooh, written by Steven D. Morris with music by Don Powers. This adaptation of A.A. Milne's classic story brings Winnie, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Christopher Robin and all their friends to life and was originally written and staged by Steven D. Morris and Don Powers in 1986. At that time, Morris was the theater's first Children's Theatre Director and was frustrated by the lack of entertaining scripts for children, so a few years earlier he set out to create his own with his talented friend, Don Powers, who composed all the new music.

There's a new Dance Movie, which opened nationwide Friday, October 11th, that's sure to advance the genre in popularity.  In the last few decades “Dirty Dancing,” “Footloose,” “Flashdance,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “Staying Alive” and more recently “La La Land” all caused quite a stir when they hit theatres, and many of them are still quite popular today.   “High Strung Free Dance” and it's predecessor “High Strung' (2016) has everything you could want to see and hear in a film about dance, music and dancers. Written and produced by professional dancer Janine Best Damian “Solid Gold” and numerous film and television appearances, and her talented actor/singer/director/composer/husband Michael Damian (Joseph in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”/Broadway; 18 years appearing on “The Young and the Restless,” among many other credits for directing, as a vocalist and creating soundtracks for films he's also directed). On the surface Geva Theatre Center's Fielding Studio series production of QUEEN examines the potential devastation caused by the dwindling honeybee population due to Colony Collapse Disorder. This first look seems to indicate that Madhuri Shekar's play will be another social drama about the capitalistic monolith and its insidious corruption in greedy pursuit of wealth. Monsanto stands as the corporate boogeyman that needs to be taken down to save the bees and thereby rescue the planet. The plot could be linear and predictable, clearly establishing villain and hero. Thankfully, Shekar's play delivers a much more complex and thoughtful dramatic work.

You never know what's just around the corner and that's the fascinating thing about discovering cabaret artists who are new to your milieu. Last night it was at the corner of 71st Street and 2nd Avenue at the Beach Cafe. Friend Ron Abel, one of the music industry's preeminent pianists/ arranger/music directors in his heads up to me about this artist said …“Sometimes you get lucky. You get to work with a smart actress whose ability to understand a lyric translates to her being able to take the song to a place that people haven't heard before. And then, she has the vocal range and ability to take it that one step further.” That folks is Lianne Marie Dobbs who while new to me is well known by cabaret enthusiasts.

Theatre Arlington begins 2020 with a knockout punch in Ripcord, opening on January 10th. This hilariously inappropriate comedy by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, David Lindsay-Abaire, introduces us to Abby and Marilyn, residents of the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, who have been forced to share a room, despite being polar opposites. Abby, the cantankerous one, is forced to share her quarters with new-arrival Marilyn, the chipper one. Of course, Abby has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly happy Marilyn by any means necessary. A harmless bet between these mature ladies quickly escalates to a dangerous game of one-upmanship, revealing not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden.
