This was a first, where uneducated street kids stood up to the big suits and won. In 1992 Disney created the movie Newsies that went on to become a popular hit. In 2012 Harvey Fierstein, Alan Menken and Jack Feldman came to Broadway with a musical show they created based on the film. Newsies is currently onstage at Candlelight Pavilion. Artistic Director Brigid Larmour today announces programming to complete Watford Palace Theatre's season for September 2019 - June 2020, following the world première of Mushy: Lyrically Speaking earlier this month. As part of Japan Society's 2019-2020 Performing Arts Season, the Society proudly presents a dynamic performance of Japan's scariest ghost stories from Kwaidan, a collection of Japanese folktales by writer Lafcadio Hearn. In this one night only event, acclaimed actor Shiro Sano brings selections from Hearn's tales to life, accompanied by visuals as well powerful live music by distinguished guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto, sharing with audiences a glimpse of Hearn's open-minded view of Japan and the world. Commencing the live performance, folklorist Bon Koizumi, Hearn's great-grandson and Director of the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum in Matsue, Japan, will give a short lecture on the writer's relevance today. Kwaidana?"Call of Salvation Heard from the Depths of Fear takes place Thursday, October 24 at 7:30pm at Japan Society (333 East 47th Street).

Based on the cult classic movie of 1992 starring Christian Bale, David Moscow, and Bill Pullman, Newsies tells the 'David vs. Goliath' story of the newsboys of New York rising up to fight newspaper publishers in an attempt to secure rights for themselves. Newsies is also inspired by the real-life Newsboy strike of 1899, when Kid Blink led a group of newsies on a two-week-long strike against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other newspaper publishers. The musical shines a light on the exploitative labor practices and social injustices as a group of young kids try to fight against the powerful and corrupt businessmen of New York.

A new generation is taking over the Des Moines Playhouse! I'm not talking about a new artistic director, or the close of their 100th season. This generation can be seen on stage in DMP's production of Disney's 'Newsies: The Musical' which opened this weekend. I say a new generation because half, if not more, of the cast are making their DSM debuts, and if this production is any indication of where the Playhouse is going, they will be around for another 100 years and more.

Disney's NEWSIES, a musical, historical fiction, based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, fills the Civic Center Music Hall with a hefty dose testosterone and rebellion that will have you itching to pump your fists in the air after each raucous, rambunctious number. 

Theatre Royale has been touring Southern California presenting a Broadway-quality production of Disney's NEWSIES starting at the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, CA on June 22 and ending in Fresno with two performances on July 13, 2019 at 2pm and 8pm. I can tell you after seeing the show at the Soraya at CSUN last weekend, I now understand why this high energy musical has been so popular with audiences since its 2012 Broadway opening where it was nominated for 8 Tony Awards and won two for Best Choreography and Best Original Score. There is something in it for everyone, with the kind of magnificently energetic dancing that ranges from ballet leaps to tap and every form of movement in between.

He had almost single-handedly guided the Walt Disney animation studio back to glory after decades of reduced returns, and he had the bright idea to try to do the same to the live-action movie musical.

The Actors' Gang presents VIOLENCE: The Misadventures of Spike Spangle, Farmer, written by The Actors' Gang Artistic Director Tim Robbins and Adam Simon and directed by Bob Turton, who was most recently seen at The Actors' Gang as "The Maniac" in Accidental Death of an Anarchist. This no-holds barred satire of militarism and media manipulation begins performances May 2nd (Press Opening May 11th at 8:00pm) and will run Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, through June 22nd.
