For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy

Romeo & Juliet will extend for two weeks due to popular demand. The production, starring Sadie Sink and Noah Jupe, directed by Robert Icke, will begin performances at the Harold Pinter Theatre on Wednesday 18 March.

While most people knew Chadwick Boseman for his blockbuster appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as T’Challa/Black Panther, the actor was also a playwright and director. His early career was spent treading the boards in New York, where he became a Drama League Directing Fellow at 24 years old in 2000. His most celebrated play is now premiering in the UK 21 two decades after its American debut. Written in lyrical verse with direct references to the Shakespearean structure, it brings hip-hop to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. It’s a treat to see something so modern and pertinent to our times being staged on the cloistered stage, but the piece is frantically overlong and unfocused. There’s lots to love, but it ultimately doesn’t satisfy.

Dom Hartley-Harris has joined the cast of Mozart: Her Story – The New Musical assembling at Theatre Royal Drury Lane for two special performances on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November 2024.

MOZART: HER STORY – THE NEW MUSICAL, based on the life of Mozart’s sister, Nan, marries Mozart’s classics with over twenty contemporary original compositions by Tegan Summer (Book & Lyrics) & Gregory Nabours (Music & Additional Lyrics), and will have two special performances at Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November 2024.

Olivier award nominated director Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu (For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy; Rumble in the Jungle; 2022 Black British Theatre Award for Best Director) will lead a company of young artists aged 18-25 and amazing professional creatives in HEAVY. 

City of London Sinfonia (CLS) will return to Smith Square Hall (formerly St John’s Smith Square) this autumn with a three-part series, Patterns of Nature, curated in partnership with a trio of inspiring experts to bring fresh perspectives on environmental themes by placing them at the heart of the concert experience.

Talawa Theatre Company’s flagship programme for emerging theatremakers, TYPT, is back this summer.  A team of emerging Black artists aged 18-25 will work with established artists to create a brand-new show in four weeks, with invaluable access for young artists at the start of their careers to professional support including director Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu.  This summer, the participants will create work themed around success.

David Byrne, Artistic Director of the Royal Court, has announced that Mike Bartlett (Love, Love, Love), Ryan Calais Cameron (For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy), Vinay Patel (An Adventure) and Nina Segal (Shooting Hedda Gabler) will join the Royal Court as Associate Playwrights, alongside Gillian Greer (Boy Parts) as Associate Playwright and Dramaturg who joined the organisation earlier in this year.
