On Sunday, June 16, Washington, D.C.'s theatre community gathered to celebrate the end of MICHAEL KAHN's 33-year tenure as Artistic Director of Shakespeare Theatre Company with musical and dramatic performances, special guests from the worlds of entertainment, politics, and media, and a mayoral proclamation.

ReFrame, a collaborative initiative of WIF LA and Sundance Institute, announced the inaugural class of ReFrame Rise directors at the 2019 Women In Film Annual Gala on Wednesday, June 12 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. The inaugural class of ReFrame Rise directors include Desiree Akhavan, Haifaa al-Mansour, Patricia Cardoso, Hanelle Culpepper, Sydney Freeland, Zetna Fuentes, Tina Mabry and Meera Menon.

Jacob's Pillow opens its 87th season with premier Canadian contemporary ballet company Ballet BC in the Ted Shawn Theatre, June 19-23. Celebrating ten years under the leadership of Artistic Director Emily Molnar, Ballet BC is considered one of the most significant Canadian companies, acclaimed as "physically rigorous, dramatically solid, and truly contemporary" (Dance Magazine). Ballet BC's program features the U.S. premiere of Bedroom Folk from Israeli collaborators Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, Molnar's most recent work To this day, and Medhi Walerski's signature Petite Ceremonie.

The International Contemporary Ensemble announces six composers chosen to be the first ICEcommons Artists-in-Residence: Helga Arias, Kate Gentile, Murat olak, Ylva Lund Bergner, Fernanda Navarro, and Bergr n Sn bj rnsd ttir. Represented by a diversity of backgrounds and musical styles, the cohort was selected by a panel of ICE musicians and outside experts who, over the course of six weeks, became familiar with more than 700 composers who submitted their creative work for consideration via a new call for scores on the ICEcommons web portal.

Compagnia de' Colombari, an international collective of performing artists founded and directed by Karin Coonrod, presents More Or Less I Am: a music-theater piece drawn entirely from Walt Whitman's revolutionary free verse long poem, 'Song of Myself,'one of the original twelve pieces that comprise his 1855 collection Leaves of Grass. The next performance in this series, spanning multiple venues throughout the five boroughs, will take place on Sunday, May 26, 2019, 7:30 pm at Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn.

Returning to Lincoln Center after critically acclaimed performances with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra at last summer's Mostly Mozart Festival, Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi performs Bach's Italian Concerto in F major; Debussy's Images, Book 2; and Rachmaninoff's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor at Walter Reade Theater on Sunday, May 19 at 11:00 a.m. in a Sunday Morning Coffee Concerts recital presented by Lincoln Center as part of its Great Performers series.

Hailed as a dream team of performers, longtime musical collaborators and friends, violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Jeremy Denk, will unite this spring 2019 for their first-ever trio tour stoping at The Soraya on May 8. The three artists will perform hallmarks of the trio repertoire in acclaimed venues across the East and West coasts. Though Bell, Isserlis and Denk have previously released the landmark 2016 recording For the Love of Brahms together on Sony Classical, these performances mark the first occasions in which they will tour live as an ensemble. The Brahms album has been praised as Absolutely essential listening for the classical fan well-crafted, flawless killer stuff.

"There's probably no frame wide enough to encompass the creative output of the pianist Vijay Iyer," The New York Times observed. His Ph.D. in cognitive science from UC Berkeley is just the start. He's been recognized as a bona fide "genius" by DownBeat magazine and was named by GQ India as one of the 50 most influential Indians. The jazz pianist is also a prolific recording artist and his quintet will play the final Jazz Club performances of The Soraya's 2018/19 season on May 10 and 11.

The residents of Flint and Ann Arbor, Michigan were treated to a very special event because of the University Musical Society (UMS): Yo-Yo Ma visited as part the performer's two-year journey to perform Six Suites for Solo Cello as a catalyst for social action and it marks the first time Ma extended the model beyond the Bach Project to a broader audience. Ma's visit was two-days filled of activities including a talk by him in the University of Michigan's Hill Auditorium on 'Culture, Understanding, and Survival,' as well as a Day of Action in Flint, Michigan with the theme, 'Flint Voices: Culture, Community, and Resilience.' At the Day of Action, Ma worked with community partners to transform lives and forge both a more connected world and a healthy and vibrant local community with the goal of the session to find new opportunities for collaborations across Flint's cultural communities and organizations. The strategy session was followed up by a community cultural show that was a celebration of Flint's vitality, diversity, and artistry. BroadwayWorld Detroit had a chance to speak with two of people heavily involved in brining Yo-Yo Ma and his Day of Action event to Michigan - Jim Leija (director of education & community engagement for UMS) and Natasha Thomas-Jackson (Flint-based arts advocate). On Sunday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m., New Yorkers of all ages will take the Zankel Hall stage for Soul Mechanism: A Concert Celebrating the Music of Migrations, a special evening that marks the culmination of a citywide creative learning project. Led by celebrated performer Toshi Reagon and a band made up of longtime collaborators, the concert will showcase original songs written by New Yorkers in a performance featuring American roots songstress Martha Redbone, jazz and gospel vocalist Lizz Wright, singer-songwriter and filmmaker Be Steadwell, activist-artist Taina Asili, Sudanese singer Alsarah Elgadi, and other special guest artists.

Dixon Place presents Unfinished: A Way Out, a new dance commission by Heidi Latsky Dance Company featuring collaborators Meredith Fages, Jerron Herman, Jillian Hollis, Heidi Latsky, and Tiffany Geigel.

The Poetry Society of America named Darcie Dennigan the recipient of the inaugural Anna Rabinowitz Prize, judged this year by Matthea Harvey. The organization's press release explains that Dennigan has been chosen for her play, The Happy End. An athletic performance piece and an adaptation of Monica de la Torre's collection of poems The Happy End / All Welcome (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2017), The Happy End was originally performed as part of the Providence Fringe Festival in 2018 and is currently being remounted at The Wilbury Theatre Group until April 13.

After waiting with bated breath, super-collaboration group New Idea Society has released a second single via Sargent House. Comprised of decades-long friends Mike Law (Wild Arrows, EUCLID) and Stephen Brodsky (Mutoid Man, Cave In) and New Idea Society drummer Alan Cage (Quicksand) and guest bass collaborator Brian Cook, the new offering explores the heavy shoegaze and grunge influences that brought the group together. 

The NOLA Project closes the 2018-19 Season with its sixth-straight outdoor world premiere, THE HENCHMAN: A SHAKESPEARE STORY, by ensemble member and Big Easy Entertainment Awards Theater Person of the Year, Michael Aaron Santos. In this wondrous new sequel to A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, the true story of Jacob, the little changeling boy who Oberon and Titania quarreled over many years ago, is revealed. Unexpectedly learning he is the long-lost son of the King of India, Jacob discovers he must now flee his fairy-world homestead to escape the pursuit of Esau, Jacob's warmongering brother who is hell-bent on dispatching Jacob, and claiming the throne. Oberon and Titania are forced to send Jacob with his faithful friend Puck to Greece to enlist the aid of Theseus and Hippolyta in an adventurous comedic follow up to the Bard's timeless tale.

Coastal Jazz & Blues Society announced today additional performances for the 34th annual TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival, taking place June 21 to July 1. The Festival lineup now includes headliner Herbie Hancock at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on June 29 as well as genre-bending performances from diverse, cutting-edge artists at Performance Works on Granville Island, Pyatt Hall (843 Seymour Street), and Frankie's Jazz Club (765 Beatty Street).

The International Contemporary Ensemble, 'America's foremost new-music group' (Alex Ross), performs Tyshawn Sorey'sPerle Noire: Meditations for Josephine featuring star soprano Julia Bullock on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 10pm at Oberon, the American Repertory Theater's club venue. Perle Noire: Meditations for Josephine honors the brilliance, daring, courage, and tragedies of Josephine Baker in a production conceived by Peter Sellars with original music by Tyshawn Sorey and texts by Claudia Rankine, both MacArthur Fellows.

On Saturday, May 18th at 8PM at CMT Auditorium in New York City, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony led by Maestro David Bernard, will perform the New York Premiere of an animated interpretation of Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' set to live music.
