A night of surprises, enthusiastic artistry and brave new compositions graced the Roy Thomson Hall Tuesday night. The TORONTO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA opened its 2017-2018 season with a program that effortlessly mingled the classical with the contemporary. This is a year of big changes for the orchestra. For the past 14 years, music director Peter Oundjian has been successfully anchoring the TSO as one of the finest orchestras in the world. The Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs announced today that the ELEVATE public art festival will be held in various locations in Downtown Atlanta from Saturday, October 14 through Saturday, October 21. ELEVATE: Enlighten seeks to provide a platform for artists and art professionals to share and exchange knowledge and experiences that have shaped their work. Participating artists will touch on issues surrounding the plight of veterans, issues of gentrification, and the power of healing through art, while art professionals will lead panels and workshops about public art trends, the business of being an artist, and community empowered projects. Opening their 41st season in tremendous style, the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center offers a superb production of the Tony winning musical Dreamgirls. Running through October 1st at the Oakdale venue, this incarnation boasts a stupendous cast who are absolute naturals in their respective roles. Theatre in Historic Places: Lummis House Doubles as Scottish Castle for MACBETH

He walked from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in 1884 and then he built a castle in Highland Park with stones from the nearby arroyo. Charles F. Lummis, first editor of the LA Times, knew how to make an entrance. Now the historic site will get a starring role in one of Shakespeare's most dramatic plays, MACBETH, for two weeks in September, when Benjamin Pohlmeier and his Junction Theatre Company mount a site-specific production using the castle as its backdrop. The Jewish Museum's upcoming schedule includes a diverse array of exhibitions. This fall the Museum will present an exhibition that focuses on Amedeo Modigliani's early work, as well as the first comprehensive exhibition in the United States drawn from The Israel Museum's world-renowned collection of Jewish costumes. In January, for the first time in 25 years, the Museum will open its new, major collection exhibition that will feature more than 650 works from antiquities to contemporary art. Finally, the spring sees the first survey in the United States of the work of Marc Camille Chaimowicz, one of the first artists to merge performance and installation art.  (more...)

The SCHONBERG (BOSTON) FELLOWS is a pilot mentored residency initiative that connects The Yard to the professional dance community of Boston, created in partnership (and appreciation) with the Arts and Culture Program of The Boston Foundation, the city's community trust. The Yard´s Chloe Jones and David R. White have curated the 2017 group of artists, looking both at early choreographic achievement and future creative potential. Peter DiMuro, McKersin Previlus, and the duo of Claire Johannes and Jordan Jamil Ahmed are the first wave of dedicated artists to take the plunge. Old friend and acclaimed David Parker, the Boston-bred choreographer/singer/percussive dancer who leads The Bang Group (TapTheYard; Nut/Cracked), is the mentoring ghost in the machine. (more...)
