From intimate concerts, roundtable discussions, and everything in between there is so much theatre to enjoy this holiday weekend - and not all of it has to do with that Broadway behemoth called HAMILTON! 

BARD AT THE GATE - a startup play series presented by Paula Vogel, the Pulitzer Prize-winning (HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE) and Tony-nominated (INDECENT) playwright - will debut on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:00 pm with a reading of Meg Miroshnik's THE DROLL {Or, a Stage-Play about the END of Theatre}.

This Spotlight focuses on Mike Blaha, Co-Founder of Fringe Management, a company that has produced an incredible assortment of shows for both the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Hollywood Fringe Festival. Listen in as he shares his insights on how the Coronavirus pandemic has affected both this year, especially since the shutdown occurred just as the Edinburgh event had begun.

The Old Globe regards William Shakespeare as our premiere resident playwright, whose works and universal themes continue to resonate more than 400 years after his plays were written. For many San Diegans, their ability to understand and appreciate the wonders of the Bard during our Summer Shakespeare Festival has increased exponentially since they joined us for Thinking Shakespeare Live! During this unwanted intermission, the Globe's Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelsteina?"assisted by Globe veteran classical actors Grantham Coleman, Megan Ketch, and Richard Thomasa?"will pivot to offer a free live online version, taking place on Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. on The Old Globe's Facebook page.

MTC Music Academy presents a 5 week Vocal Masterclass featuring intensive technique coaching with Founder and Voice Teacher, Tegan Miller, as well as expert input from rest of the creative team, Music Director, Assaf Gleizner (Office the Musical) and Rep Coach, Andre Catrini (Astonishing Times of Timothy Cratchit). The classes will also include handpicked, personalized audition material for each student and a showcase for two Casting Directors, Holly Buzcek (HDB Casting/Wojcik/Seay Casting) and Alison Franck (Franck Casting), as well as the creative team. In this showcase, actors will present their new material and receive live, constructive feedback.

In what has become an annual ritual, a total of 40 established and emerging composers, lyricists, and librettists will converge on the Goodspeed campus from mid-January through mid-February 2020 to participate in the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals. The writing teams, representing 15 new musicals, will populate the campus, creating a truly exciting environment for discovery and inspiration.

Casting is set for Studio Theatre's production of Pipeline, playwright Dominique Morisseau's searing drama about the school-to-prison pipeline and a mother desperately trying to keep her son from becoming ensnared in it. The production runs January 15-February 16, 2020 and is directed by Awoye Timpo. Starring are DC theatre favorite Justin Weaks (Studio's Curve of Departure) as high school student Omari and Andrea Harris Smith making her Studio debut as his mother, public school teacher Nya. In its recent People Issue, Washington City Paper's called Weaks a 'standout,' going on to say: 'D.C. theater audiences love Justin Weaks. ...Weaks came to D.C. for a job about four years ago, not expecting to stay. But he kept getting cast in shows, and lucky for local theatergoers, he's still here.'

The Old Globe today announced the cast and creative team of the riveting West Coast premiere of Noura by Heather Raffo (the award-winning 9 Parts of Desire, the opera Fallujah), a graduate of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program. Loosely inspired by Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, Noura received the prestigious Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Original New Play and the L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award. Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) presents the World Premiere of HERZ SCHMERZ, a work co-conceived by award-winning choreographer John Heginbotham and acclaimed author, painter, and illustrator Maira Kalman. Following the duo's debut collaboration The Principles of Uncertainty in 2017, this new dance-play is based on the written work of early 20th-century Swiss author Robert Walser. New York Youth Symphony (NYYS), is proud to continue its mission of educating and inspiring young musicians through its Orchestra, Jazz, Chamber Music, Composition, Musical Theater Composition, Apprenticeship Conducting, and First Music commissioning programs. This season includes seven world premieres of new works commissioned through the First Music program, composed for the Orchestra, Jazz, and Chamber Music ensembles.
