The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, a program in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University, is proud to present Nambi Kelley's "Xtigone," a contemporary look at a classic Greek drama. Opening on Friday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m. in the Studio Theatre at the Hilberry. "Xtigone" is a poignant and timely story about a woman mourning the death of her two brothers, mowed down by a rival gang. Using hip hop poetry, dance, and dialogue that speaks with an urban voice, this re-imagining of Sophocles' "Antigone" tells the story of a woman's quest for her community's truth. (more...)

The saying, 'Good things come to those who wait,' could certainly be applied to the world premiere of The Good Swimmer playing at BAM's Fishman Space as part of the Next Wave festival from November 28th-December 1st. Defined as a pop requiem for the youth of the Vietnam War, this collaboration between Heidi Rodewald (music) and Donna Di Novelli (lyrics) directed by Kevin Newbury has been the better part of a decade in the making since the two women began working on the piece at a Eugene O'Neill Theater Center residency and left with three songs based on text from out-of-print lifesaving manuals that would become the foundation of The Good Swimmer -- the title song, 'Red Cross' and 'Double Drowning'. English Touring Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East today announce the full cast for Ned Bennett's bold new production of Peter Shaffer's critically-acclaimed classic, psychological thriller Equus. Bennett directs Robert Finch (Frank Strang/Horse), Keith Gilmore (Harry Dalton/Nurse/Horse), Ethan Kai (Alan Strang), Syreeta Kumar (Dora Strang/Horse), Norah Lopez Holden (Jill Mason/Horse), Ruth Lass (Hester Salomon/Horse), Ira Mandela Siobhan (Young Horseman/Nugget) and Zubin Varla (Martin Dysart) completes the cast. The New York based Kairos Italy Theater and the Italy-based KIT Italia will present the seventh annual In Scena! Italian Theater Festival NY, a festival of Italian theater taking place in all five boroughs of NYC, April 29-May 13, 2019.
