San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock today announced plans for the 2018 19 Season. The Company's 96th Season will open Friday, September 7 with a gala double-bill performance of Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci in Jos Cura's production with an international cast featuring Lianna Haroutounian, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Roberto Aronica, Marco Berti and Dimitri Platanias, conducted by Daniele Callegari. To usher in the new opera season, San Francisco Opera Guild will produce its signature benefit event, Opera Ball 2018.

One could say that the Machine chose me first, then I chose it. Adapting Elmer Rice's 1923 expressionist juggernaut was the long-time dream of librettist Jason Loewith. Apparently he had approached other composers with the project to no avail. When he finally inquired as to my interest in the project in January of 2004, I was working as a sound designer on a show he was producing at the Next Theatre Company in Evanston, Illinois, where he served as Artistic Director. Up to that point, I had never written a musical, nor did envision myself writing one and I had never read, seen or even heard of Elmer Rice's The Adding Machine.

Summer is on its way out, but Connecticut theaters are heating up with some exciting offerings this fall. Theater lovers have the best of both worlds here in the Nutmeg State: Broadway is just down the road, but we never even have to leave home to see exceptional theater thanks to the bevy of professional theaters that call Connecticut home too. This season looks particularly exciting and I'll share with you what I am most looking forward to reviewing this fall. There are other great shows scheduled this fall as well as through the 2016 season, but in the interest of space, I will concentrate on top picks for this fall.

Known for his multifaceted musical personality, composer/musician Wayne Horvitz ventures into progressively-inclined acoustic jazz and ultra-modern classicism in his latest album, Some Places Are Forever Afternoon. Written in honor of the iconic Northwest poet Richard Hugo (1923-82), Some Places Are Forever Afternoon is a full-length suite of 12 compositions influenced by different poems of Hugo's.

It's been almost ten years since the Wildcats first crowded the halls of East High School, singing of a new start, the status quo, and of course, the big game. The first of three HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL movies debuted on January 20, 2006, quickly becoming the most successful Disney Channel Original Movie ever produced. Launching the careers of a then-unknown set of teenagers, lots has happened to the cast since the last film wrapped in 2008. Much of the cast has continued in the musical tradition of the trilogy, taking on various roles in other musicals on stage and screen. Later this Spring, Vanessa Hudgens will become the second of the group to make her Broadway debut, as the title character in Gigi. What I found so utterly engaging about the world premiere of Steve Martin and Edie Brickell's new musical BRIGHT STAR is its complete unpretentiousness. Certainly its musical style --American bluegrass with a heaping helping of laid back mountain charm -- has the kind of lilting homespun ease that makes you feel like you're listening to the neighborhood jug band on mama's back porch, and there's something oddly comforting about that.

The Old Globe today announced the full cast and creative team for the World Premiere of Bright Star, a new American musical featuring music by Edie Brickell and Steve Martin, lyrics by Brickell, and book by Martin, based on an original story by Martin and Brickell. Directed by Walter Bobbie, Bright Star will run September 13 - November 2, 2014 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run September 13 - September 27. Opening night is Sunday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. Single tickets go on sale on Friday, August 8 at noon.
