Kiln Theatre
269 Kilburn High Road London NW6 7JR London

“Cause here she comes. She’s the baddest, bitchin’ babe of art”

In 1874 Elizabeth Thompson stuns the Royal Academy with her painting, Roll Call. Five years later, she falls two votes short of becoming the first woman elected to the academy.

In between, she must shoulder the hopes and dreams of women across the country – including her suffragette sister – while fighting for her place at a table full of top hats, ties and mutton chop beards.

Theatre, music hall and drag king swagger collide as Modest brings you a Victorian art scene superstar.

Performed by a cast featuring the UK's hottest drag talent, this electrifying new play will break your heart and start a revolution.

Written by Ellen Brammar (I Hate Alone) with music by Rachel Barnes, set design by QianEr Jin and costume design by Terry Herfield, Modest is co-directed by Luke Skilbeck (Milk Presents) and Paul Smith (Middle Child).

Review: AMERICAN PSYCHO: The Musical at Kokandy Productions
by Rachel Weinberg - Oct 1, 2023

Kokandy Productions’ Chicago premiere of AMERICAN PSYCHO: The Musical is a delectable, campy romp. Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham’s production is a mainly bloodless vision for the bloody tale of serial killer finance bro Patrick Bateman — and it’s an approach that works incredibly well for the material. I know that AMERICAN PSYCHO: The Musical was short-lived on Broadway and that that production was a literal bloodbath. The fact that Kokandy’s production substitutes red confetti for stage blood is a microcosm of how well this scrappy interpretation of the musical works: By making the show more camp, less horror story, audiences are then free to indulge in the satire and fun.

Review: CLUE at Blackfriars Theatre
by Colin Fleming-Stumpf - Sep 11, 2023

What did our critic think of CLUE at Blackfriars Theatre? For Blackfriars Theatre’s opening production of the 2023-2024 season, Rochester theatregoers are being treated to the classic pop culture whodunit, “Clue”, whose adaptations have spanned board game, film, musical and play. While the murder-mystery is a genre that does not want for copycats, “Clue” is arguably the standard-bearer for the modern era.
