As the world commemorates William Shakespeare's 459th birthday this April, Chicago Shakespeare Theater will celebrate the Bard with multiple events throughout the month. The Theater will honor the legacy of Founding Artistic Director Barbara Gaines with the Spirit of Shakespeare Award, which will be presented at a fundraising event at the Theater's home on Navy Pier on Monday, April 24, 2023.

Gloucester Stage Company continues its 40th Anniversary Season of professional theater with Patrick Barlow's witty mystery play The 39 Steps from July 5 through July 28 at Gloucester Stage Company, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. This award winning comic thriller adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow, from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and from the 1935 movie by Alfred Hitchcock, premiered on Broadway in 2008. The 39 Steps has played in over forty countries world-wide, winning Olivier (United Kingdom); Helpmann (Austraila); Moliere (France) and Tony Awards. The play garnered the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy; the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design; the 2008 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience; the 2009 Helpmann Award for Best Regional Touring Production; and the 2009 Moliere Award for Best Comedy.

Kentucky Shakespeare Awarded 2 NEA Grants

Arts Midwest (Minneapolis, MN) announced last week the recipients of $1 million in Shakespeare in American Communities: Schools grants to 40 nonprofit, professional theater companies from 25 states and the District of Columbia. For the third consecutive year, Kentucky Shakespeare has been selected as one of the recipients of a $25,000 award. The grant will support Kentucky Shakespeare's HAMLET tour across the states of Kentucky and Indiana to at least 35 schools in 2020, including urban areas and far-reaching rural areas of Appalachia. The student experience will also include comprehensive curriculum guides, in-depth discussions, and workshops.
