What compels people to cross mountains and seas to another country, another continent, and another culture to find their true selves? What are the journeys we take to find home and belonging?
"June is the First Fall" explores the complexities of queer identity, family, and self-acceptance. It centers on Don, a gay Chinese man, who returns home to Hawaii to rediscover missing memories of himself and his family that he moved away from. His week-long stay opens wounds with his father and sister that never healed, aggravating Don’s struggle to find love and belonging in his life.
"Written with sensitivity toward all its players, the piece offers a compassionate window into the intersection of Chinese culture, queerness, and gender roles… “June is the First Fall” is a tight, compact evening of drama.” – Caroline Cao, Exeunt
"Memories are scattered throughout this endearing study of culture, family and personal growth..." – Joe Lombardi, BroadwayWorld
This collaboration between TOJ and Yun Theatre is a milestone in Seattle’s cultural scene, showcasing the vital voices of Asian artists in contemporary theater.
Directors' Insight: Christie Zhao remarks, "This play is about a family with so much love it feels suffocating at times. It's about leaving and coming home, loving others, and embracing your own identity, culture, and language in the most delicate, intimate way. A coming out Asian queer story is rare in Seattle but resonates deeply with many."
David Le adds, "We all have complicated relationships with our families. 'June is the First Fall' poignantly explores the aspects of these relationships that are worth fighting for, offering a glimpse into the complexity of love, identity, and the culture that permeates many queer and immigrant households today."
This moving narrative invites audiences to reflect on their own experiences of love and identity, encouraging a deeper understanding of the nuanced challenges faced by those navigating multiple cultural and personal identities.
