The dueling piano event Piano Battle has sold out shows in Europe, the U.S. and Asia - and is packing the house for their Jan. 26 show in Anchorage. Currently the few remaining tickets are only available through an Anchorage Concert Association subscription (three or more shows in the season). In response to the demand for Piano Battle in Alaska, the Anchorage Concert Association has added a second, late-night set at 10 p.m. that evening.

From July 31 to August 1, The Players Centre for Performing Arts hosted the popular Players New Play Festival. This week-long event showcased five newly written works competing to be fully produced next season. The 2017 winner of The Players New Play Festival is "Before Steepletop" by Arthur Keyser. The production dates will be August 21 through 26, 2018 in the Backstage Theatre with full sets and costumes. The reading was directed by Dan Higgs as will the full scale production. The runner-up for the competition is Ron Pantello's play "Locked Doors" that was directed by Amanda Schlacter. In the unlikely case that winning play is not able to be produced; "Locked Doors" would take its place in the theater calendar.

In the past five years, The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee has been a leader in granting funds for vital programs and initiatives in the Sarasota-Manatee region. According to Howard Tevlowitz, JFSM's executive director, it's all about building and nurturing community partnerships. He explains that, several years ago, the JFSM team made a bold decision to change the way it spent donor dollars. The organization moved away from providing large unrestricted allocations to the same few organizations from year to year.
