Write Out Loud - an organization founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud for a live audience - announces American Mosaic, the fourth production in their American Season XI, a season that focuses on American stories by American authors. Write Out Loud Story Concerts bring literature to life - aloud - with rehearsed readings by professional actors. Each program explores specific themes by weaving a variety of stories and poems together into a literary tapestry. Mark Christopher Lawrence, Steven Lone, Allison Spratt Pearce, Veronica Murphy and Walter Ritter will perform in The American Mosaic. A complimentary pre-show reception starts at 6:15pm with a 7:00pm curtain.

Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare opened his San Diego Symphony Orchestra guest appearance with Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture. Payare conducted with vigorous dramatic motions, and the orchestra responded by bringing the work's romantic themes and stirring gestures to life. Principle English horn player brought exceptional warmth and beauty to the score's first solo. She wasn't unique in her excellence. Every soloist and section managed even demanding tempos and dynamic changes with pleasing tone and precision.

Cygnet Theatre kicks off 2018 with a sexy and sophisticated political thriller. The Last Wife is a contemporary look back at Katherine Parr and her relationship with one of history's most infamous monarchs, her husband, Henry VIII. But the real center of the story is Katherine's accomplishments in advancing the education and status of Henry's daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, who would both go on to rule England. Canadian playwright Kate Hennig offers audiences a distinctly feminist vantage point of both history and present-day in this West Coast Premiere. Cygnet's production is directed by Rob Lutfy and runs Jan. 17 - Feb. 11. Opening night for media is Jan. 20.

The National Poetry Foundation, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and managed in California by the California Arts Council and regionally, by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture presents POETRY OUT LOUD, a national poetry recitation competition for high school students. San Diego Regional Finals take place on Tuesday, February 6th at 6:30 pm at the San Diego Central Library, Joan Irwin Jacobs Common in the Neil Morgan Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

The San Diego Symphony will present the world premiere of Adam Schoenberg's Orchard in Fog for Violin and Orchestra during the Jacobs Masterworks concert Preludes and Premiere. Adam Schoenberg, who was inspired in part by a photograph by Massachusetts graphic artist Adam Laipson, wrote this piece specifically for violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, who will perform the work. San Diego Symphony Associate Conductor Sameer Patel will make his Jacobs Masterworks debut conducting the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in two performances Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m.

The Old Globe today announced it will present the fifth annual Powers New Voices Festival, a weekend of readings of new American plays by professional playwrights, playing January 12 14, 2018. The festival will kick off today, January 12 at 7:30 p.m. with Voices of the Community: Celebrating Local Playwrights, an evening of work created by San Diego residents through the Globe's arts engagement initiatives Community Voices and coLAB, and will continue with four readings by some of the most exciting voices writing for the American theatre today. The new American play readings commence on Saturday, January 13 at 4:00 p.m. with Laurel Ollstein's They Promised Her the Moon, directed by Giovanna Sardelli (Somewhere, The Whipping Man at the Globe), followed at 7:30 p.m. by Too Heavy for Your Pocket by Jir h Breon Holder, directed by Patricia McGregor (Globe for All's Measure for Measure).The Festival continues on Sunday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m. with The Tale of Despereaux, with book, music, and lyrics by PigPen Theatre Co. (The Old Man and The Old Moon at the Globe), based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo and the Universal Pictures animated motion picture. The Festival will wrap up that evening at 7:30 p.m. with The Great Leap by Lauren Yee, directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (Globe's Skeleton Crew).
