Interview: The Magic of Adam Trent Image

Adam Trent, aka "The Futurist" from the world wide touring and Broadway hit THE ILLUSIONISTS, is a magic man on the move. He has set out on his own tour with his show THE MAGIC OF Adam Trent, and he brings the next generation of immersive entertainment event that includes magic, comedy, and music perfect for the entire family to the Balboa Theatre Saturday, March 24th.

Like many kids, it was when Adam was around eight years old that magic caught his eye. With David Copperfield as his inspiration he turned that fascination and hobby into a job, playing at kid's birthday parties and in nursing homes. He likes incorporating new technology into his tricks, which has earned him the nickname 'The Futurist".

His desire to entertain, and bring comedy and music elements into his magic, is why Adam thinks of himself as an entertainer as well as a magician. Like many kids, it was when Adam was around eight years old that magic caught his eye. With David Copperfield as his inspiration he turned that fascination and hobby into a job, playing at kid's birthday parties and in nursing homes. So what was it that drew him?

"It was the way it shocked people, and made people react a way that was so different than music or comedy did," Adam says.

It's by incorporating different elements, including new technology into his tricks, which has earned him the nickname 'The Futurist". That sense of something new is what he wants the audience to walk out of the show talking about at the end.

"I want them to say it was completely different than they expected a magic show to be. I want them to say they laughed harder than they ever have in a theatre, and I want them to have been emotionally moved by the end."

Technology also is involved in his favorite moment of the show "I borrow an audience members phone and put it in a blender onstage. I always enjoy seeing how different people react to that."

Adam does say that current technology does have the added impact of making some in the audience a bit more cynical about what they are seeing, but that's just an additional challenge for his showmanship.

"My goal is to make people forget about the tricks. Will they be fooled? Yes. But I want them to not care about being fooled because they are too busy laughing."

Magic, is perennial and audiences always want more of it; it's even found its way into a new police procedural this spring. Adam has a theory on the continual draw of magic "It's the closest thing to being a real life superhero. Magicians are people who make the impossible seemingly possible. It's like being James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, and Superman all in one. I certainly want to be that guy."
